Magnetic Lanyard
on: April 04, 2007, 02:28:33 AM
I had an original thought today.  I'm not crazy about lanyards & split rings on my tools because they usually get in the way.  I also don't carry my Vic OHT very often because I haven't found a good way to suspend it in pocket.  I was looking at some of my fishing stuff today & realized I could use one of the Ndyme magnet net connectors that I use on my trout net since the OHT has a good steel end on one end.  If you don't have experience with Ndymes, they are extremely strong magnets that hold so well that they're hard to pull apart.

Here is the magnetic connector on my trout net.

So I put a little black paracord on the Ndyme & made it the right length to tie around a belt loop, & now the OHT hangs just inside my pocket suspended nicely & can be pulled out by the paracord & the magnet pulled off the end of the OHT & the OHT is ready to use without anything attached.  When I'm done I can just snap on the magnet & put it back in my pocket suspended again.

OMG, that seems too good to be true. Does the magnet really "stick" tight enough to securely hold the knife?

It holds pretty darn well.  I could put the other side of the magnet on the lanyard ring if I wanted it to be really strong, but it just needs to be strong enough to hold it suspended in my pocket.  The other cool thing is that as you put the knife into your pocket the magnet snaps onto the back & then slides up to the top as you slide the knife in the pocket.  Pretty cool!

I could probably glue another magnet on the end of the knife if I wanted a super strong hold without the lanyard ring.

The magnet would have to be glued far enough over to clear the screwdriver/can opener.

Doesn't work on the X-Tract.  It pulls the pliers out.

You might accomplish the same thing without a permanent change to your knife.
Instead of gluing a magnet to the knife, you can thread a split ring through the eyelet at the end of the knife, attach a widget to the split ring, then glue the magnet to the widget.

That's a good idea, but I can also just use the other side of the magnetic holder in the top picture attached to the split ring.  I was trying to get away from having any split ring at all.

It holds really well just on the steel on the butt of the knife, so I won't be gluing a magnet on.

Really cool Idea.  I might have to drop by cabelas next week.  It is only 30 min from my place and I need some ammo and a pistol scope for my new toy.

I've been using this on my OHT & Spirit now for over a week.  It really works well!  The only thing to beware of is laying the magnet on your wallet.  It's probably strong enough to mess up a credit card.

I was thinking the same thing,  I carry my tool in my left hand pocket (no idea why I am righthand) and my wallet in my right hand pocket.  I guess the magnet might not get on with a harddrive either (iPod's!!)

Not me yet. I still haven't made it in to the local sporting goods store to see if they have the magnet connectors.  :(

I'm giving this thread a bump to see if anyone else tried the magnet lanyard for pocket carry since last April, & to let some of the new guys in on this idea.  I'm EDC'ing a Spirit on a magnet lanyard right now.
