Opinel Knifes

Be wary of a No12, they're pretty huge.  Very nice and all that, but far to big for carrying IMO.  A No10 might be a nice middle ground.

I picked up a no. 6 just as an impulse buy. very elegant and simple like everyone says. I actually use it in the kitchen in preference to all the other knives there because it is so much sharper, its thinness makes it great for slicing.

Mine is No8 carbon... Agreed on kitchen use... I use mine allmost exclusivelly for that...

Got a couple more new colors in. Green and Orange. There is supposedly a Purple and Red one too but my supplier seems to not have them.

They defo do a purple because I couldn't make my mind up which one to go for when I was on holiday in France last year - went for lime green in the end (with some encouragement from my daughter).

I then had the buy her the child's version in lime green, she likes lime green! I also bought a child's version in Orange for my Son when he's a bit older. That's to go with the red one and blue one I already have for them!!!

I finally got some Opinels in to play with, an SS 8 and then a SS 10 since the 8 was too small for my hand, the 10 fits perfect.  They are neat and I mostly got them for my collection, but I cant see them replacing any of my other outdoors knives.  People talk about them and I figured I better have some so I can have informed opinions.  Also I want to mode one with an aluminum handle.

Ive got a few now and try and pick one up a month from my local hardware store, they are actually cheaper there than online and he said im about the only person who ever buys them from him, my favourites are the non locking #4-5 and a #6 with the ring popped off, my most used is my #4 -5 closly followed by #6-8 i still need the larger ones 9-12 but i dont think they will get much use, but i will go against my user policy and get them, i have doubled on a few including 4-5-6 plus i have 2 #3's they are handy altoid tin knives ,  i would like some of those coloured ones aswell ,

I haven't put as much effort in as you on the photo front as we currently have hail stones and I really can't be bothered to get wet today (plus I'm supposed to be working - shhhhh, don't tell anyone...)

So here we go, first up are my favourite's, two #8's both in stainless which I personally prefer. As you will see Ive modified one of them by changing the blade shape to a drop point style, rounding off the back of the handle to make it mo comfortable and also by filing the notch on the top / rear of the blade to allow the knife to be straight when opened and locked in to position. Not sure if anyone else has noticed how Opinel's are always, well, bent in the middle!? I've filed the blade on the Olive wood version as well, see how straight they are in the second pic (or am I kidding myself here LOL)?




Here is almost the full collection In our household, missing is an orange and red #7 child's knife. I say "in our household" rather than "my" as my son and daughter own all the child's knives!



From the top, we have numbers 10, 9, eff 12 (two of), my 8 mod, 8 olive wood, 7 green, 6 and then two number 7 child's knifes.

very nice jon, love the modded ones, ive not really done much modding on mine as kind of like them as they are but i will have a go one day, i like the carbon blades as they get a nice patina on them and i think it adds a little character    ok its rust    nice pics as well jon,

My only carbon blade is the no.9 (second from top). I also modified the blade shape on that one but messed it up a bit. Its funny you mention the patina as that's the thing I don't like, I like shiny 

All Opinel's are cool though IMO.

All bar one of mine were actually purchased in France, 3 or 4 of them actually came from the Opinel museum that I dragged the family round - twice! (and on separate trips to France).

I sharpen them on a Spyderco Sharpmaker, wow, do they come up well.

The big no.10 only does BBQ duties really. I don't think it's practical for pocket carry LOL. Always a good talking point though.

I would love to go around there museum it must of been cool, another reason i like the carbon blades is because it goes nicely with opinels history and even i can put a good edge on them and im useless at sharpening knives  ive still to get some of the bigger ones but i look forward to getting a #12 , i dont think ill bother with the 13
