Opinel Knifes
« on: May 03, 2009, 08:36:49 pm »
I was looking at a Opinel knife at a Rite Aid store. Does anyone have one of these knifes and if so what do they think of it.

indeed good value, black writing I believe is carbon steel, red is a stainless.  I have the carbon steel unit, average size and it makes an excellent camp knife in the campground on veggies, meat and whatever else you might have a need for it.  Give the blade a light coating of veg oil after you use it so it won't rust (carbon steel) and you should be set.  Oh, don't stick it in dishwater, try and wash the blade only.  I dunked mine into water and what happens is the wood on the handle swells and will make if quite difficult to open and close it for a time afterwards probably until it completely dries out.

Great knives I have one, they are light, sharp and very safe as far as the lock up system.

It's a barrel lock that rotates around the pivot (good solid lock up)

Easy to open and close I got one for my father in law made out of olive wood (very pretty) he sometimes has trouble with his fingers.

Cheap, sharp and fun to modify.

I generally soak the handle in a mixture of Linseed oil and turpentine for a few days. It's a bear to clean up, but once it sets up it keeps the wood from swelling.

They are not bad. The blade is smaller and thinner than a Bahco so you need to use a little more care to avoid bending the blade.

I think for the price there charging for them anyway, I'd probably just get a Bahco anyway :)

Thanks :tu:

One that is no longer manufactured...the Woodzig/Gerber Sport saw. The best feature of the Woodzig teeth is that it can be re-sharpened with a chainsaw file.
