Anyone here modify their SOG to suit their needs?

I was wondering, who has modified their SOG tools to suit their needs?

I am getting some SOG's within the next couple of days, and I am going to modify them all. I already have ones in standard configuration, so I plan on making these suit my needs.

On the first one, I plan on having a scissors, V cutter, bottle opener, PE blade and in the other handle: serrated blade, awl, large slotted, philips, can opener, and a saw. This would be my idea tool!

On the second one, I plan on making a boater's PowerLock. I am going to put a C4 spike (to be used as a marlin spike), a serrated blade, a serrated line cutter on a SOG S62. I plan on taking out some items to make it all fit

I'm not sure how I'm going to mod the last one! I\

That's a good arrangement.  For mine, I prefer the 1/4 socket adaptor over the v-cutter.  I've also been meaning to add the full serrated blade to my powerlock and replace the combo edge blade to plain edge but I haven't done it yet.

Remember the "LONG" implements have to be on the outside edges of the handles. The "V" cutter is a little thinner than blades so it will fit next to a blade and let the PL close properly. A knife blade and "V"  cutter are about the thickness of the file or the saw, that is why they fit together  ( "V" cutter and a blade ). I'm pretty sure a "V"  cutter will vot let the tool close if it's next to a file or saw blade due to their thickness.  Sometimes when I'm at my desk playing with SOG tools my wife asks if I'm playing with my SOG LEGO toys !

SOG uses plastic donuts as spacers to allow the removal of tools and the spacer takes up the free play so the tools don't flop around in the handle. Pretty "cheapo" way to do this - having a plastic spacer makes no sense.  I put a thin metal washer between each tool ( ALL / maximum amount of tools are in each side of the handle - does not make sense to put a plastic spacer in a tool when you can fill the blank space with a tool ) . The metal washers make for easier opening, no clumping and it’s a metal against metal connection.  If you want plastic spacers you can ask SOG customer service for some, but I find the washers are better. You can buy a package of s/s washers at Lowes for a couple bucks. Some times I use the "tooth" variety and other time plain - they both work well.

BEFORE you take any of the SOGs apart take some pictures like mine so you can see how the tools are arranged. The Phillips head is is a little awkward as it's wider at the tip than the base, the metal washer on each side fixes the problem.  The end of the tool / implement with the hole in it is the connection / rotation point for putting the tools in the handles. The  BIG , repeat BIG notch is what the lock bar hooks into to lock the tools open. Make sure when loading the tools that the large notch goes against the handle when the tool is open.  Pretty soon you will get the hang of it.

NOTE: the tools for a Pocket PowerPlier do not have the large notch ( like ones for the PowerLock )  because the tools do not lock open on a PPP as they do on a PowerLock.

Playing SOG LEGO's is fun ....

Have fun

SOG LEGOS's :D, quite fun indeed :tu:

i had my S61 customized with a V-cutter instead of scissors, PE blade instead of PS blade and SE blade instead of the file so in one handle i have:

PE blade, bottle openner, 1/4 socket adaptor, and v-cutter

and on the other side:

wood saw, awl, flat screw driver, phillips screw driver, can oppener and SE blade

and also have a custom PPP

with the regular components plus a large flat screw driver and a small flat screw driver instead of the plastic spacers that used to have and a SE blade instead of the file

That PPP looks real good, I like the PPP's more than the PowerLock.

#1 rule with a SOG  " get rid of the plastic spacers " and add some tools / implements !!

One of the first things I done with my B60 was modifiy it to suit my needs.  I am a Glock armour and I hated having to carry an armorer's tool.  So I put one in my SOG since it never leaves my side.

Here it is in use,  it locks back and works great.  It's the only tool I need to fully take apart a Glock and I end up useing it constantly.  It's one of the most used tools in my SOG actually.

I really LOVE that mod you have done because it’s a prime example of what you can do with a SOG. Just love it.

2.0 head, non-locking and no blade (i.e. legal edc)? Nice job Neil! :tu: How big is that compared to a PPP or PL?

1. Did you make the Glock  tool / implement  or is it something available for sale?

2. Spyderco made a knife with the Glock tool as a part of the knife

That version of the Glock tool was actually the first one I made.  It's just a hex key that was in one of those folding hex key sets.  I just had to measure then cut two groves into it.  One so it will lock back and the other so the lock would clear and engage the other tools.

The second version was machined following the basic design of the other tools but with a 3/32 punch on the end.  It looked cool but due to it's increased size It had to be one of the outside tools.  Which meant losing a tool I wanted.  It worked good but wasn't strong it bent while removing the back plate one day.

The third and finale version was made out of a 3/32" stainless steel rod used for knife making.  I bought the rod off ebay for a couple of bucks.  I bent it into a P with the loop the size needed,  then cut the groves like I did for the first one.  I used gun bluing to dress it up some.  The tool is like 3 inches long and it's next to my saw where the awl should be.  But with the tool closed the P lays with the loop pointing up and since the rod is so thin it doesn't get in the way of the plier head.

Honestly though the hex key was the easiest and it worked great.  I just didn't like people seeing that it was a hex key in my SOG.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you all of the details in case your thinking of making your own.  If you are all I can say is go for it.

Thanks Medic,  Yeah that mod actually helped 3 of my buddies buy a SOG multi tool.  Well not so much the tool I made but them seeing that they tools can be easily customized did.  I think SOG should point that out more in there advertising.

This might be difficult, but could anyone add a sort of width guide to the list of components, eg:

Blade = 0.5
V-cutter = 0.5
File / saw = 1

Max per side in a PPP = 4

Or something like that. I've made those figures up. That would help when planning mods :)

SOG width guide

Phillipshead screw driver - 1 tool width, NOTE: because of the "tulip" head on the Phillips, the tool on either side needs to be a short screwdriver, etc. as a longer tool will rub on the head of the Phillips and cant the screwdriver, making it bind

In most cases knife blades, "V" cutter, serrated line cutter, file ( the longer implements ) need to be on the outside edge of the tools, otherwise the plier head will not fold in to the handles.

NOTE:  The tools / implements for the Pocket PowerPlier and the PowerLock are different. Tools on the PPP do not lock open, on a PL they do . Hence the PL tools have two notches at the pivot point, the deep one is for the lock tab to engage into.

The  1/4" drive takes the space of 2 tools.

The C4 spike takes the space of 2 tools

Scissors I am not sure, I believe they take up  the space of 2 tools also.
I have no scissors in my MT's - I have a selection of blades to cut with.

Mind you, I've just read that you can only get two long tools in a PPP because of the pliers, when I thought you could get 2 on each side (I'm probably confusing the PL, the PP and the PP). Is that right?

You are correct - the inside edge of the handles on a PPP are indented leaving only the 2 outer handle edges to accommodate long blade implements.

I don't have a  ParaTool at the moment to look at, so I'm not sure how that can be configured.
