Questions about a knife.
on: June 19, 2009, 01:52:46 AM
I took out my father's old hunting knife today. It was one of his prized possessions. He gave it to me about a year before his passing. This has huge sentimental value to me.

Now, I have looked it up on the Internet and haven't found another one that matches it. I am sure there are a few, I just haven't gotten lucky yet I guess.

He bought it when he was a young man. He paid the then large sum of 7 dollars for it (He said it was the higher model). In fact, the leather sheath still has the price tag on it. He bought it in the late 50s, early 60s.

Some of the stitching has fallen apart. I know I can easily fix this if need be. I sort of like it left alone though.

On the blade, it says "Original Buffalo Skinner".

The handles are made of horn held by 4 brass pins/rivets. One side is carved.

The blade is marked "Buffalo Brand, RUKO Solingen".

Now for the questions:
1.   Does anyone know the history of this knife? I have looked but can’t seem to dig up any useful information.
2.   The blade has a patina to it. It is remarkably in good shape otherwise. No signs of rust or anything like that. The steel does appear to be slightly discoloured in places. The knife is still very sharp, and only a few scratches are evident. Does anyone knows how to clean this blade, or is there no way? If I can’t, I am still very happy with the way it looks. On top of this, is it because it was stored in its leather sheath for decades?

Any information would be helpful.

Thank you.

Head over to Bernard Levine's forum at Bladeforums and post everything you've posted here, over there. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have an answer for you.

Ok thanks. I am going to wait a bit and see. Hopefully someone may be knowledgeable on this forum. I would hate to register over there just to post once for a question. That would be my last resort.

I've got the cheaper/lower model!

I don't know much about it either, just that it's been around
for a long time!

Sounds good. The blade is in rather good shape. It just has a patina over it. I was unsure if that was due to age or being in contact with the sheath for all tha time.

Actually I am sure there are a ton of those knives oout there. Most of the older stag knives are from Germany and are great little knives to own. Ya see what happened is after WWII Vets wanted inexpensive but quality knives and the Germans fit the bill. Reason why the stag and polished blade was mostly psycological. Ya see the returning vets actually went away from military spec. knives so Kbars were benched and Civillian look was in.

Levine wi.ll give you a ton of info on this and where it is made, but my bet is german.

Well Solingen is the German equivalent of England's Sheffield.  Long of tradition of knife and sword making there.

Yes, still active. What is your question? I may or may not be able to answer it...as I am far from being an expert on this knife.  :salute:
