Am I the only hate the blunt blade point on OHT?

I didn't think much of it till I tried to cut a plastic bottle in half. It should be a simple job with a sharp knife, stab and slice. Not so much with OHT. Well if you have one you know how the point is, pretty much as blunt if not worse than a sheeps foot blade. It's just impossible to stab through soft plastic. The awl wasn't that good either, while it works well on wood etc. it's just not sharp enough to poke through plastic bottle. In the end I have to use a lot of force to push it through, which IMO is downright dangerous, because the blade could slip easily and onto something else, like fingers.

One of these days I'm going to reprofile it to have a point, but the way it's shaped a lot of metal will have to be removed.

  • Why is it doing that?

I usually use one of the serration points on the front of the blade to start a cut requiring a pointed blade. If that's not enough, the awl comes out.

+1, i really dont have any problems with the blunt tip, of course its not good at stabbing, thats why it has an awl

It bugged me a little, but not a great deal.

Being used to non-locking saks, I'm wary of stabbing-motions anyway  :-\

I would have used the Saw to cut a plastic bottle  >:D

You know I never really notice it too much, I remember thinking very briefly about it one time.  I'll have to check the German Army version and see if they are all like that.  I would think that the seratted blade should have been able to do short change of the bottle without stabbing it.  Interesting, given regular SAK have such a nice spear point.

Why not just sharpen up the point on the awl?

I had the same experience with mine trying to cut a bottle in half as well! I posted about it awhile back, but I ended up cutting myself with a SAK for the first time in years! And it went deep, too! I just can't believe a knife they issue to soldiers has a blunt tip.

I ended up putting it on a disk sander, the point is nice and sharp now, and poke through bottles easily. :)

And you suppose that soldiers spend all their time walking around stabbing people?
It's not a fighting knife... :P

Think of the cash they would have saved on Bayonets if they issued Wenger Rangers.

Yeah, makes you wonder why they didn't build a locking folding blade into their s.i. rifles in the first place... ::) :D

Yep, while the non-serrated part by the handle makes sense (sharpen a pencil with a serrated blade, try it for once  :) ) the lack of a proper point is a turn-off, I'm not getting a serrated OH SAK though I'm ripe for an upgrade to my Nomad.
A plain centimeter or so at the tip, like Spyderco does would be better.
