Hiking/Camping/Hunting Fixed Blade
« on: August 11, 2009, 11:50:10 PM »
Topic says it all.  I'm looking for a good fixed blade for all the above activities.  I have a plethora of SAKs and multitools, but there are times when I wish I had a solid, dependable, fixed blade.  I'm not looking to spend more than $50 or so.  I'm considering the Buck 119, but I'm not sure that's what I want.  I love my cold steel folder, but it's a bitch to sharpen, so I'm not worried about the super steels.

So any suggestions?

Air Force survival knife is a good all arounder. Cheap too. You won't be afraid to actually use it. There is a thread around here somewhere.............

I don't have one (yet) but a lot of people are very impressed with Kabar Becker BK-2.  It's also called the Companion I believe.  I am looking at getting one for my dad and read a bunch of great reviews over at bladeforums.  You might want to check out Youtube as well.  There's a lot of good videos that actually demonstrate some of the things you are talking about for different knives.

I know of many people who would vouch for a Fishwolf SBK, which can be found over at EDCForum for either $10 or $20, and made to order.  I'm still debating about which one I want, myself. :/

You could always get a Mora.  They take a super sharp edge and at the price you pay you won't cry if it gets lost.  lots of folks swear by them.  Shop around for a good price.

I don't know about the 119... I have a couple of them and they've never struck me as good "all around" knives.

I do like the Omni and Alpha Hunter knives from Buck though.  I use an Omni hunter as a general purpose knife when I'm out and it's always worked great.  The Omni's are the cheaper of the two, and should be well below your price point.

Another one I like from Buck is the Kalinga, but I've yet to own or use one.  I've heard they are decent though.

Moras are great knives, some of the sharpest I own.  for $50 you can probably get 3-4 different designs.  www.ragweedforge.com has a huge selection and fast shipping.

A more robust knife would be the Ka-Bar Becker line.  Any Camillus Becker knives you come across will probably be way more than $50, but the current production by Ka-Bar are around that $50 price point I think.

another vote for a Mora, especially for your first to see if it is enough or not for what you do.

can't beat the price and while they are not the prettiest blades with the toughest materials
they really are good blades that do most jobs well.

I'm a big fan of the Mora line as well. I love the scandi grinds and like you said, the price is great!  :tu:

I got an Airforce surival knife just for that purpose.  It's heavy duty and not to pricey or fancy so you aren't afraid to use it.  Mora makes good basic knives.  I have one of their wood carving knives.  Their basic thing is a no nonsense basic handle with good steel.  So they are inexpensive but work well.
