Of course if you are into Van Gogh you can skip the broad brimmed hat.  :D

what is interesting the crack is actually the whip breaking the sound barrier  :D

Yep and amazingly if you do it right you apply very little force to the whip to get it to do this.  The whip does all the work.  The only thing I find I need strength for is to keep the arm steady, not to crack the whip.

Yeah when I first started back in 05 I tended to use brute force and tired myself out within 30 mins but you soon learn once you begin to relax it becomes clear  :tu:

Yeah it's about control and not power.  I find when I practice in slow motion I get more consistent cracks.  It takes very little.  The speed of sound is just over 700 mph depending on where you are in relation to sea level.  The speed of sound is different at different altitudes due to air density.  The speed of the cracker can exceed speeds of 900 mph.

Ralphie: [Ralphie is shoved down the slide, but he stops himself and climbs back up] No! No! I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!
Santa Claus: You'll shoot your eye out, kid.

If you should hit and break your glasses with it remember it is always good to have a good story in hand like an icicle breaking off the roof and hitting you in the glasses.

I am a little concerned about John's choice of a 4' snake whip.  Their advantage is being compact to store.  A short whip like that is also better in confined spaces such as a bedroom.   >:D

Haha! I wouldn't recommend using this whip in bedroom games "OUCH"  ;)

My reasoning behind the short whip is: it rains all most all the time here, having a short whip I'm able to practice indoors  :D

You might want to try this guy out in Florida.

http://www.cowwhips.com/

He specializes in nylon whips.  They are popular in Florida just for that reason.  Water doesn't bother them.  Florida has a very damp, wet and rainy climate and nylon is the material for choice there among stockmen.  From what I have heard and read they preform very well.

Yeah the nylon whips are also good for a beginner.  They are less expensive and whips aren't cheap.  They also take less care than animal hide whips and have no break in period.  The nylon is soaked in paraffin wax for a treatment and use shot or BB's in the core for weighting.  You could probably soak these in water and not hurt them.  If you look at the photos they can also be very attractive as nylon cord comes in a lot of colors.  I know Robert Dante uses them in shows with black light for a very nice effect.  If you are in a damp climate where moisture and mildew are a problem this is the way to go.

Well Princess I don't have proclivities, just want to learn something.  I did get the DVD "Whip Cracking With the Masters" by Anthony De Longis and Colin Dangaard as well as a book on it.  I have yet to raid a tomb with my whip and fedora yet but am planning on it.  :D  The last couple of days I haven't been able to practice outside as it has been raining.  Even then I practice pull, push, roll exercises inside.  Anyone can swing a whip around and probably get it to crack but not in any controlled and consistent way.  I practice the different kinds of cracks over and over and over again till I am getting that.  As you might have seen John and I discuss it actually takes very little to get it to crack if you execute one right.  The whip does the work, you just have to control it and make sure no energy is wasted.  Once I am confident with this I will work on accuracy with targets and perhaps wraps.  When wrapping something you don't actually crack it on the wrapping target but above it and then it wraps so there is no real force on the object being wrapped.

Just a note on the "adventure" part.  If you decide to learn the piano so you can play like Chopin you will spend many hours doing scales and practice, not exciting but if you want to get good at something...  Same with the whip.  If you want to look like Indiana Jones you practice drills over and over.

I had a lady friend who was into it many years ago , I'm plain vanilla , but I have talked to a number of people who were into it . Contrary to what most people think , the sub usually is the one in control of the scene , not the dominant .
