Gerber Cable Cutter Multitool
on: October 30, 2009, 11:53:09 AM
I stumbled on this odd/rare Gerber on US Ebay , $38 latter it was mine  8) 8) 8). I have been hanging out for it too find me & today it arrived :mail: :D :D

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303604-1.jpg[/img]]
It is a MT based on the MP600 series of tools with the plier head replaced with a cable cutter

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303605.jpg[/img]]
I wonder if this cutter head was available for the Gerber 650 MT with the interchangeable/removable plier heads

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303608-1.jpg[/img]]
Tool selection is the same as that found on my Gerber MP600 blunt nose + carbide cutter MT below , with some small variations.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303609-1.jpg[/img]]
Note intact carbide cutters  ::)

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303610-1.jpg[/img]]
Different shape & nail nick/hole

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303612-1.jpg[/img]]
Blade serrations are more aggressive on the Cutter MT + different nick/hole

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303622-1.jpg[/img]]
Cable cutter MT's file looks slightly coarser  , I really dislike the holes for file deployment instead of nail nicks. SOG uses holes as well & I find it leads to what ever you are filling catching in the hole  >:(. Not a fan  :D

So how does Gerber's Cable Cutter perform as a cutter ................................................... Really badly  ::) :D :D :D.
I grabbed some scraps from my work bench , some very light duty flexible wire , the shaft from a used pop rivet & some thick coat hanger wire.
It cut the soft wire no probs , the pop rivet shaft I tried but found I was having to exert a fair bit of force & yet it did not cut. Worse yet it put a very small notch in the cutting edge(Bob is going to be horrified  :D). To prove I was not asking too much , I first used my BO MP600 too cut the scraps which it did(too a point).

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303623.jpg[/img]]
Small nick from the pop rivet shaft , I did not attempt to try cutting the thick coat hanger wire with the Cable Cutter.
I think the Gerber Cable Cutter is very much a light duty cutter that performs at a lower level than most plier's wire cutters. Mad isn't  .
I still love having such an odd oddball tool  :D :D.

Post script ;   What Can Happen To Carbide Cutters :(

My poor old BO MP600's carbide cutters died in the name of my wee test , one shattered & the other cracked.(Dennis will not be happy with me  ::) :D).
The coat hanger wire that caused the damage was quite hard & 2mm/0.08inch in diameter.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Gerber%20Cable%20Cutter/S6303616.jpg[/img]]

Interestingly I had used the MP600 yesterday to cut the same wire when hanging some Elk Horn ferns  .
I then decided to try cutting the offending wire with my LM Surge's hard-wire cutters & my SOG PowerAssist's hard wire cutters. Both the big boys had no trouble but I suspect if I was too constantly repeat the process they would soon become blunt.
I have Bob's words ringing in my ears "Gerber's Carbide cutters, I have heard can be a bit brittle"  ::) :D :D :D

The cutters on the Gerber are for copper wire only.  That's why the Powercut was such an interesting tool.

Here was I expecting a nice calm review.  Not MT torture  :twak:  Naughty tool abuser Mat ;)

In fairness I think the Gerber cutters look like electrical cable cutters.

Will you be able to get hold of new carbide inserts OK?
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

That information would of been useful a few hours ago  ::) :D :D :D
I think I will be able too sand the small nick in the cable cutter out no worries.
Neil I have seen replacement Gerber Carbide Cutters on ebay , the $20 I have seen them for is a little rich though. Hopefully I can pick up some cheaper ones. :D

To answer some of the OP questions:

1.  Yes the Evo 650 had the cable cutter head as an option.  I have it mounted on my 650 as it happens.

2.  Ben is right, it's meant for copper or Al wire only.  It works pretty well upto 12/3 wire cable.

3.  The tools on the 650 differ a bit too, with a jigsaw blade holder built in.

4.  Remind me to NEVER loan my tools to MultiMat!  :ahhh

BTW you do not have to lend me your Gerber 650 I would be most happy if you gave it too me  :P :D :D.
I would like a 650 , great idea I reckon. :D

As a person who deals with a lot of 12/3 SOOW on a daily basis, I have .always had a semi-interest in those Gerber cable cutters. But naturally they can only cut copper. Quite simply, different types of wire/cable need different types of cutters.

Hey Mat, how about a close up of how well that new nail nick lines up with the cutout in the handle. ;)

Oops, now I feel foolish. :-[ Mat I was trying to poke fun at the way the Gerber blade doesn't line up properly with the handle cutout, but they went and changed blades on me. :P Yours lines up just fine!

Here's a pic of mine from a year or so ago. Notice how the fingernail slot in the blade is way off?

Do not feel bad Bob :pok: :D, have a look at my NEW  :ahhh MP400(corkscrew) serrated blade  >:( >:(

Really badly unevenly sharpened & a notch thrown in for good measure on a new tool  >:( >:(

On the other-side of the blade at the tip there is a blackened bit like it has been burnt

Ugh. Seems like with an official company name like Gerber Legendary Blades they would strive to make their knife blades better than that. :P

Hey, the Legendary part doesn't /have/ to imply that they're good. :P  Still, I do like the shape of the BO blade. *shrugs*

Nope, they mean "Fend for yourself..." after the tool of ours you purchases has broken or has tiny and ineffective blades. >.>  Still, I like the EAB, just the thumb section on the frame lock needs to be larger, and the screw needs a bit thicker head to be a proper thumb opener.
