Narrow escape - in need of a windscreen breaking tool
on: November 12, 2009, 08:07:09 AM
My wife had a narrow escape today - after taking our one year old for his immunisations, the boy locked himself in the car, with my wifes handbag and everything in the car. And she could not find anything to smash the window. With the temperature here being in the 40 degrees Celsius, she had minutes before our boy would have died. Luckily after a minute the boy pressed the unlock button, but it was a close call. Prayer works.....

Any recomendations on a combination of windscreen breaking and seatbelt cutting tool? I want to buy a few keychain size ones, and then I will get myself a bigger rescue type knife for the SUV as well. Any inputs would be appreciated.

I've seen some of these tools a while ago, but thought them to be rubbish. But not anymore. One day you can find yourself standing next to someone like my wife watching a boy like mine in a car, with not even a brick or stone in sight.....

Although I don't think one would helped in that situation, since it'll probably in her purse.

Probably engage the child safety lock on rear door is a better option, or have a spare key attached to somewhere outside of passenger cabin, with a neodymium magnet (I have one hidden on mine).

definately go the spare key in a magnet box  in one of the wheel arches. A lot cheaper than replacing a window

Dogs and children,

My wife always has a spare car fob in her purse (lock/unlock sender).  Also, in our GM cars we always get OnStar.  Call em, they unlock the car (or start the car and turn on the air conditioner.  :D)

We've done both.  Works great.

unscrew the antenna and use that to break the window. I've seen it done. If it was a do or die situation i could see me using my fist. ::) :D

The ResQMe is a great little tool to carry.  Both myself and my wife had had one on our keys for quite a while now.
I'm back!!

Another vote for the ResQme. although I keep mine inside the car - so it wouldn't have been any use in that situation!
I used to come here a lot.

I have to mirror the thoughts of some of the others here- if your wife's purse and keys are in the car, anything designed to be in her purse or on her keys is not likely to have been helpful in that situation.  The ResQMe tools are great (I love mine) but like many tools they suffer from actually having to be in your hands in order to function.  Tragically, even the best tools are useless when you can't reach them.

As such, I'd look into the magnet/extra key solution as well, or at least get a magnet with a hole in it and strap one of the ResQMe's to it so one of them is always accessible from outside as well.
