Some new Gerber tools this year
on: December 25, 2009, 12:26:50 AM
As we have discussed before, and Dave Bowen posted in his look at the Gerber Booth at the last Blade Show, Gerber has a new sliding head minimalist plier tool coming out soon called the Octane.  It's finally been listed on the Gerber site, and it available in two accent colors, although it looks like the main body of the Octane is going to be the standard bead blasted finish:

Octane in Black

Octane in Red

The Octane, stolen from Gerber's page is, as I said, a minimalist tool, which could give the Skeletool a run for it's money.

Features:

    * One-hand opening pliers
    * V-cut wire cutters
    * Pocket clip
    * Bottle opener
    * Half serrated & find edge blade
    * Small cross driver
    * Square cross driver
    * Large flat driver
    * Retail package opener

Specs:

    * Overall Length: 5.5"
    * Closed Length: 4"
    * Weight: 5 oz
    * Opening Style: One-hand opening
    * Components: 9
    * Stainless Steel- Satin Finish

One that came as a little bit of a surprise to me however, was the new Strata multitool, which at first glance may appear to be another Suspension/Resolve/EVO/Ripstop type clone:

If, like me, that is your first thought, then, like me, you'd be wrong too!  The Strata has an MSRP (again according to the Strata Page on Gerber's site) of $104.00US, making it the second most expensive butterfly opening tool they have, and putting it on par (price wise) with the Diesel, Flik and MP600 series tools.  I have to say, I am looking forward to seeing the Strata in person and putting it through it's paces.  This looks like a handy tool.  More specs, straight form Gerber's site are:

Features:

    * Pliers
    * Carbide pinch cutters
    * Saw
    * 1/2 Fine edge & Serrated blade
    * Can & bottle opener
    * Scissors
    * Large flathead driver
    * Retail package opener & small driver
    * Large cross driver
    * Small tipped file

Specs:

    * Overall Length: 6"
    * Closed Length: 4"
    * Weight: 7.4 oz
    * Opening Style: Butterfly
    * Sheath Type: Nylon
    * Components: 13
    * Stainless Steel- Brushed Finish

Last but certainly not least, Gerber is taking on a segment of the market that has been dominated by Leatherman for many years- the locking plier that Gerber has named the Grappler:

Gerber says:

Quote
The Grappler is one of those engineering feats that makes even us step back and marvel. This vise-grip snaps into ready position with just one-hand and locks down for a tight bite on any screw 5/8" or smaller. With 13 total components including a sturdy-sized knife blade, the Grappler is sure to be a Gerber classic.

I have to say, I think it looks pretty cool, and again, with an MSRP over $100, it looks like Gerber is finally turning back to better quality multitools and leaving the discount line in the dust.  Some info on the Grappler:

Features:

    * One handed opening pliers
    * V-cut wire cutters
    * Locking plier adjustment screw
    * Nail puller
    * Pry bar
    * Cross driver
    * Ruler- Inches/ Centimeters
    * One finger open/ close button
    * Wire stripper
    * Liner lock on all components
    * File & large flat driver
    * 1/2 Fine edge & Serrated blade

Specs:

    * Overall Length: 6"
    * Closed Length: 5"
    * Weight: 10.5 oz
    * Opening Style: One-hand opening
    * Sheath Type: Nylon
    * Total Components: 13
    * Stainless Steel-Stain Finish

Look out Leatherman, it looks like there may be a viable alternative to the Crunch coming!  Unlike the Schrade and Kershaw locking plier tools, the Grappler appears to incorporate the traditional Gerber sliding head design, meaning that the Crunch is no longer the only collapsible locking plier head tool on the market.

Add in the Shard, which has become quite a hit despite not being readily available yet, and it looks like Gerber has a great lineup coming this year.  It also seems that for the first time in a while, we are not seeing any new Suspension type clones, which, as I said above, seems to indicate that Gerber is re-thinking it's tool line and getting serious again.  All I can say is that I am personally happy they are turning in the right direction, and I will continue to support this kind of behavior!  I hope to have additional pictures, information and some in hand thoughts on these tools in a few weeks when I get to SHOT.  For now all I can say is Gerber is taking great strides in getting my attention!

They all look good.

Especially the Grappler - that's a "must have" I reckon.

Grappler is definitely on the radar, hope the quality justify the price.

And they need to dump the bead blast finish, easily scratched and rust magnet.

As usual, MSRP is a bit high- I expect the street price on it to be about $70 or so, which is comparable to a new Crunch.

Once again they redirect us Brits to a site with less details than the .com version. it's not as if they don't have the images is it?

Edit:

Hey, this Grappler is looking even better! I just noticed in the video that they did away with those awful stubby screwdrivers like the Flik has and replaced them with extra-long (outside opening) screwdrivers. :tu:

The Grappler phillips is still a "flat" style, but I don't mind that nearly as much as how short it is on the Diesel, Freehand, and Flik.

That is really cool!  I was a bit disappointed to not see any photos of the tools splayed out, but I guess that will have to be our job in a few weeks!

I am dead keen to get one of those Grappler's  :drool:. I think I will go for the stubby nose pliers though  :think:.
I thought the Gerber flick plier opening technique was an urban myth  :think: :think:. I can not flick open any of my Gerbers  :think: :think: :think:

Bob you knob Gerber tools are too stubby to use in a nasal environment  :twak: :P :D :D. A Flair is my dedicated nasal MT  ;)

I can not flick open any of my Gerbers  :think: :think: :think:

Why  ???

At the risk of appearing a weak wristed sissy man I had another go at flick opening my Gerber Cutter MT.
F me you really have to give it a hell of a flick  :ahhh, man alive I would kill some one if it slipped out of my hands & hit them whilst flicking it open  :o :o.

OK I have found the problem , I am a weak wristed sissy man  :P :D :D.

No it was my technique the Gerbers flick open a lot easier being held horizontally with the locks pointing East West. I had been trying to flick them open with the locks facing up in a North South position  :D :D

Err - you're not squeezing the handles together as you do it are you? That would make it tricky.

Done right, it should be easy and work with the MP400, MP600, Diesel, Flik, Freehand etc......

EDIT: You got it ;)

I am keen to se how the grappler holds up against the crunch. I love my crunch (now on 2nd one) but to be honest it gets nearly 0 use time because the damn handle pops off the head if i use it as a pair of pliers.

Since my crunch main purpose is to be the wingman for my paratool or powerlock i don't mind the grapplers tool layout.

i pray that someone here is obsessive enough to buy both needle and blunt nose to simply to compare them for the greater good (i am leaning to 'blunt' since its the wingman)
