Complete collection ...a list?......what is a complete collection

OK........ bear with me for a bit...

first.....I started collection about 1989 when I purchased a leatherman. now.....about a few tools later and a collector....

second.....has anyone or any organization established how many models and major manufacturers will constitute a complete collection?

third.....any vague ideas on how many models and variations will make up  this collection?  (like 300 or 3000 ? etc)

fourth....when should an official timeline be established for "modern" multi-tools.......the first leather man??? or what

fifth.......do pocket knives count as a multitool? victornox etc.  for collecting purposes

sixth.....I have taken a lot of criticism from family and friends on my hobby. I have been accused of having the most "boring" hobby in the world. who can speakup and validate this hobby for us.

seventh......has someone done a coffee table book on multi-tools yet ?  or a calendar ?

eighth....ok...I have vented and questioned and ranted......now..........I have worked as an industrial mechanic/technician for over 30 years, the best multitool I have ever used in the swiss...........victornox  swiss tool.

ninth......I saw on the news the CIA has a museum of weapons and tools......one of them is a  schrade.....used to amputate a limp in real life....did anyone else see this episode ???I think it was on nbc or cbs news a while back.

1. You’re not alone.

2. There are several good websites that help, but the knowledge base is vast, and I know of no one source that comes close to what you are asking. Mind you, you have found the right place to start your enquiries. SAKWiki for Swiss Army Knives is very very good, albeit not complete. Likewise, the Multi-tool Encyclopedia is a very good place to start also. Both are tied in with this forum.

3. I have a fairly nice Leatherman collection at the moment, but not as extensive as a few other members on here. I would say roughly 150 Leathermans would be close to it, if you count all the PST variations out there, but that is a rough guesstimate. I am sure someone else in here would have a more definitive and knowledgeable answer to this question.

4. Official timeline? Funny that you should ask that. Check the timeline in the General Tool Discussion Forum. It is a sticky.

5. Yes they do. Multi-tools come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Swiss army knives fit the bill as do the plier based MTs along with other weirder tools out there.

6. This hobby does not need any validation other then the personal enjoyment one gets doing it. That goes for any hobby/collecting.

7. There have been mention of someone in here doing one, but it takes time and money. Two things in short supply. The knowledge, this forum has a plenty.

8. You will find plenty of people in here who will agree with you on that tool. The best MT is different per person. It depends upon their needs and wants.

9. I haven't seen that episode. Sounds interesting though.

I don't think the is such a thing as a complete collection, the are (and have been) so many manufacturers, and so many models from them (especially the swiss makers).

Looking at that last photograph...the saw looks rather different then mine. I wonder if that was a special made tool for the CIA given to field operative medics, or another model I am unaware of.

I really can't give anything near definitive answers to your questions, but I think a collection is in the eye of the beholder. There any things considered to be unobtanium too so completion may be an impossible task.

What I do know is that this place will probably encourage you and support you in your obsessions! We have a lot of very knowledgeable members who will share their info with you in your quest.

Can I see another picture of the saw on your model? It looks more like a serrated blade from the angle of the third photograph. I had thought that the saw pictured here was the only type present on the ST1 but it appears that a look at the Encyclopedia shows that the sheepsfoot blade (as on yours) was on the Series 1 tools but was later changed to a saw.
