Shovel multi's?
« on: January 06, 2010, 10:49:55 AM »
With all the snow we have had recently (which really isn't like over here) one of my multitools that has seen a lot of use is my Glock Entrenching tool.

This tool slips into the back of my Maxpedition Remora Gearslinger perfectly and goes everywhere where I and my car go.  It may only be a small shovel, but due to the tiny single track roads that I have to drive down to get to work, I really wouldn't be without it.  This year alone, I have dug people out of 2 ditches, dug my car out of the snow twice, dug my wifes car out and also helped 3 of my neighbours in the snow.  This thing certaily earns it keep and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a compact and solid shovel.  They really are superb.

(Just a few old pics)

It has a handy (although I have never needed it) saw in the handle;

And the bag it easily slips into;

So what other options do you guys have?

That's great. Ours is a cheap Gerber one which folds up but is smaller. I think Hedgekid has a bigger one too but I'm going to throw the small one in the car with the blankets, food and other sensible things.

Does that really qualify as a multitool?

It's neat nonetheless, and while I am certain it's tough, I just don't trust folding shovels, which is why I've always been a fan of the Cold Steel shovel:

The solid handle may not be as convenient, but I know I can pound on this sucker and have faith that it will come back for more.  Plus, it can be used as an axe as well, although to be honest, I also keep the Ontario SPAX in the Jeep too, so if I need an axe I'm more likely to use it than a shovel!

I see no reason why not as it is a spade, shovel, hoe and a saw.

I have really beat on this one and it doesn't give an inch.

Forgot to mention in the past year it also shovelled hot coals when we had a slight oops at the UK meet.  :D

I am surprised Mike has not made off with it Ben  :o :o :o on account of it having a saw & all  :P :P :D :D :D.

BTW if I saw that in a shop I do not reckon I could walk past it  :D :D it would be great to chuck in the trailer for when we went camping.

It has a saw like edge and would work in a pinch.  It'll do the job.

I know some women with saw like edged, but I refuse to keep them in the car.  ;)

I've always wanted to get that Glock shovel, especially to keep in a pack.  My Cold Steel shovel is tough as nails, but if I want to pack it, it has to ride on the side under the straps of my Falcon II which isn't that convenient overall.

I need to get one, but the price of those glocks, (even if you can find one) is prohibitive.

I'm probably just going to pick up an army surplus one from down the road. I think they were a fiver and fold sufficiently to not be a problem.

Make sure it's a genuine one, as there's a lot of crap copies out there :-\
