This should liven up the Axe Hole- BENCHMADE HAS A HAWK!
« on: January 27, 2010, 07:14:03 pm »
When I stepped into our meeting at Benchmade, there was only one thing that could get my attention of the lovely Alicia, whom we met with last year too.  I spotted it as soon as we walked into the office, and my first response was "Benchmade has a f*cking tomahawk?"  Alicia nodded and handed it to me.  All I could think of was "Benchmade has a f*cking tomahawk!"

I am in love..... Benchmade is arguably the finest quality production knife company out there, and a hawk from them is a dream I never knew I had.

Everything is beautiful about this hawk- the weight, the feel and the sheer lethality of it almost make you forget just how utilitarian it could be.  I really can't imagine any tomahawk oriented job that this gorgeous tool couldn't accomplish.  The handle is comfortable, the head configuration is just about perfect, and it has a pry bar at the base of the handle.

No information was available on the type of sheath, other than saying it will indeed come with one.

Other specs are:

1095 steel
G-10 handles slabs
Apple Seed mill bevel

Tragically this poor beastie is a bit out of my price range at an MSRP of $325, but a guy can dream, can't he?  :D

It looks great, and the prybar end is a welcome addition...I don't recall any other hawk out there with that.

OMG

I've been searching for that puppy all my life!

How much do you think they'll eventually retail for though, as the MSRP seem's a little steep for the materials involved ???

I'd say you will likely see it around the $200-250 mark.  With an MSRP of $325, the wholesale cost is roughly half that at $162.50, meaning that you'll be hard pressed to find it anywhere under $180.  It's a little too pricey and specialized to be used as a loss leader, so I imagine dealers are going to want to make more than a few dollars on this one.

That thing will throw nice! However I really would like to see a little less of a swoop on the spike, but I would kill for that thing!

For and with that thing I imagine!  It is indeed a beauty, and as sweet as it looks in pictures, it's sooooo much nicer in the hand!  :D

OK, that's cool  8)

I have no need and at that price can't see it as a casual acquisition but yeah, I can understand the reaction :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I'm not normally a fan of modern "tactical" axes/'hawks, but even I have to admit that's a thing of beauty. 8)

From the eye of the machinist: I was intrigued with the way the bevels were produced on this hawk. Notice the little troughs stairstepping up the slope of the prybar? These were done on a CNC milling machine with a ball-nosed cutter. As a matter of fact, ALL the bevels were produced this way, even the spike and the hatchet edge. They no doubt clamp the rough blank down on the milling machine table and cut all the bevels in one operation, then flip it over and machine all the bevels on the other side.

I can't imagine this "Apple Seed" contour imparts any advantage to the finished product....? But it does give the designer complete freedom to produce the angles and profiles to any shape they can imagine.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
