Show us your Spyderco
Reply #420 on: July 13, 2014, 06:13:30 PM
After trying a few Spydercos, I think I finally found the perfect one for me; the Caly 3.5.

My first Spydie was a Delica.  I was impressed by how light the knife was, and I like the VG-10 steel.  However, I never could warm up the the FRN handles.

Next, I tried a Paramilitary 2 after reading all the rave reviews.  It is a really cool knife.  The pivot is super smooth allowing the knife to be quickly flicked open.  The ergonomics are great.  The knife feels like an extension of the hand.  Yet despite all this, it just isn't for me.  The knife, especially the handle, is just too big for my tastes.

This week, I got the Caly 3.5 and love it.  The handle shape reminds me a bit of the Delica.  It is thin and contoured.  It is also roughly the same size closed as the Delica, measuring only 2mm longer.  Yet it has a blade length that is 16mm (5/8 in.) longer than the Delica.  This equates to the same blade length as the PM2, but in a much smaller package.  I posted some comparison pictures below.

The Caly 3.5 isn't regarded as a hard use knife, which is fine by me.  I don't have a need for my pocket knife to be able to stab through sheet metal or split  firewood.  Despite its reputation as more of a gentlemanly knife, it feels very well built.  It has 3mm blade stock, and stainless steel liners with G10 handles attached.  The lockback design results in a solid back.  Aesthetically, I love the feel that the solid back gives the knife.  It reminds me of a slipjoint with the back springs and liners ground together such that they appear as one solid piece of metal running the entire back of the handle.

This knife has a deep pocket wire clip that I also really like.   I don't necessarily like to advertise the fact I am carrying a knife.  With the Caly 3.5, the entire knife stays concealed in the pocket.  The wire clip is also much less visible on the outside.  With its grey color, it camouflages itself well when wearing blue jeans.

The aesthetics of this knife remind me of an alox SAK.  Thin, yet very solid.  Gentlemanly, but tough enough to handle any reasonable tasks that comes its way.

Here are my Spyderco's.  I recently got the Blue G10 Ambitious which is pretty cool little knife.  I've been carrying my Tenacious mostly for work and the Ambitious for off days.

Wow!  Where did you get the blue ambitious?  Cool...

Nice! Even though I'm left handed and not that keen on liner locks I do like the lines on that one.  :tu:

I know how you feel about the Ladybug. I really like it and do not know why. It's a tiny little bugger, but cuts like a larger knife and just has a cool factor to it.

Yes, the one at the bottom of the pic. There is another red one in there but it was a yellow H1 serrated bladed ladybug till I dyed it red.

Yes the one at the bottom. Seemed different and after looking at it I noticed the hole is smaller and the handle shape is different.

Unfortunalty the early LB's steel were not stamped on the blade as they are today. According to Spydiewiki Gen 1 LRD could have been made with G-2, AUS 6 or AUS 8. Gen 1 LB were made from 1990 to 2003. LRD were made from 1994 to 2003.     :)
