Build your own Technician
on: March 06, 2010, 07:00:56 PM
I love the concept of the Victorinox Technician. I think a long flathead screwdriver would get more use than the can opener. The problem is that they are super rare. This one went for $162. http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140371977835 So I was looking at SAKwiki and I came up with this idea. Just take off the can opener portion of the tool. So I made a mockup in Paint.net. I don't have a Farmer, but I do have a Cadet. This should work on the Cadet also. I'm trying it now.

Great thinking.  You have me debating it.  So many battery compartment screws are recessed making this a useful mod.

Another good thing about this mod is that it is super cheap. You can get a Cadet for around $15.

Any reason to leave the hook on the opener at that point?  I think I'd get rid of it as well, just to give the driver that ickle bit more throw.
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

That's a good point. I thought about it, might try it latter.

Be careful, the hook is actually what hits the backspring preventing it dropping down too far.  You can lose a few mm from the end but not the whole protrusion.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Thanks. I didn't think of that.

Nope, the cap opener's been filed down so you can use it on more recessed screw's than you would otherwise be able too :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Yup... love this Idea, I do like that Technician's driver it is so much more useful to me than the wide one.  Modifying the canopener allows it to work woth Phillips too which is nice, although the flat straight unpolished Technician's screw driver does have the edge for good flat/slot screws.

I'm wanting to try this mod on my 91mm SAK. What I'm concerned about is taking too much off the bottom curve and thus making the nail nick too low to access.

Does anyone perhaps have a picture of the driver\opener layer showing where the curve touches the back spring?

The way the spring is designed I dont think it would workon a 91.  It also wont work on a new cadet after they changed the backspring.

So I looked at my cadet. And I found that the stop hits it about 4mm back.
I used some blue paint and saw where it hit the opener.
Will grind it later. Here's pics of the mark.
The black part is what can be ground off.

Ha! Thats awesome.  Seems like its an upgrade for sure since the long driver can reach screws easier than a can opener too.

Could the inside of the bottom curve be sharpened to act as a package opener?...

It can still open cans!!! :ahhh

Did you have to sharpen or profile the underside? How well would you say it works compared to the regular can opener?

I actually prefer the mod to the standard vic can opener. I always seem to get the vic opener to slip. I like the Leatherman type of opener better but here in UK lock blades are not legal carry, so the modded option suites me well. The other problem was that when working with electric plugs and connectors the small driver on the SAK is way too short.

I haven't sharpened the underside of the driver at all. It pierces the can easily.

So I received a technician in the mail today. So I modified a farmer to compare.
First thus only works on 93 mm alox. 84 doesn't work and 91mm cellidor doesn't work.
