I'm very much of the same opinion Dan - if you can afford quality, then that's the way you should go every time! Especially with gear!

About a year ago, the missus and I went shopping for lightweight waterproof coats. In the Peaks (as with any high ground) the weather can be a bit unpredictable, so I explained to her that any coat she chose should be :

A) Gore-Tex;
B) A recognisable, warrantied brand;
C) Lightweight and preferably easily packable in a small day pack.

I picked up a Berghaus pack-lite. Ticks all the boxes, weighs next to nothing and has the Gore-Tex that I considered essential. She, bought some cheaper brand thing at about the quarter of the cost "because of the price". I could not dissuade her. Needless to say, hers was a pig to carry around and didn't protect her from the elements like mine did, making a couple of walks we did last year quite uncomfortable for her, and today she's told me that the zip has fallen apart.....

Me: "Shall we go and get you one like mine then?
Her: "Yes please".
Me: "OK then".
Her: "What are you looking at me like that for"?

If it wasn't my money I'd find it quite funny  :D

thats the argument my materials teacher has

he went " i could buy a reggata coat of the same quality as a Berghaus one, the difference being that the regatta one will be good for one or two walking seasons and the Berghaus one will last me at least ten years'

oh and by quality he means fit for purpose
