Spyderco Salts - who likes them?
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:10:36 PM »
Just wondering how many folks around here have (or have had) any of the Spyderco Salt knives and if they liked them. Been toying with a Byrd Resue or Salt, fully serrated. I'm not really a serrations kind of guy, just thinking about it.

I have a Pacific Salt and I think it's awesome.  The H1 is a pretty good steel and holds a reasonable edge.  Does mark easily though.

I really like the idea of a salt. But I heard they are really soft. Any truth in this?

Love em!!!  Salts are sexy.  Yeah they do mark easily but they are so nice.  And the serrations on the Saver Salt are awesome.  I don't really like serrations either, but that knife cuts through anything.  It doesn't rip or tear, just cuts.  I love it.

I've read H1 is decent steel, hold a pretty good edge and "work hardens" during sharpening.

I have the Pacific Salt, had it for about a year now.  It does mark easily, scratches and stuff but
for work in and around a moist environment it's a great knife.  Good for a tackle box I'm sure
amongst other things, kitchen etc.  When said it holds a reasonable edge I would agree, although
a lower side of reasonable from what I'm used to and expect of a steel.
It is a nice, slim, light weight folder that makes a good edc.  I'm carrying it right now as a matter
of fact at work.
If you are used to super steels and don't require a corrosion resistent blade you might be a bit
dissappointed depending on your needs.
I remember reading fairly recently and it was suggested on the Spyderco forum that the H1
work hardening theory was pretty much shot down as not being quite right.

I would agree that its just a theory. I`ve used 4 different Salt I`s and Pac Salts for two years and none of them keep a better edge they they ever did.

I've got  a Tasman Salt (bottom one in pic), which I love.  As others have said, it just cuts through anything.

According to Spyderco's website, the H1 Salt knives have a Rockwell Hardness rating of 57-58.

That's good to know about the "work hardening" bit being a myth. In your guys opinions, how does it compare to SAK steel or Buck 420HC?
