Sheath Making Leather Source
« on: April 06, 2010, 02:56:28 pm »
I was wondering if any of you guys have knowledge of a recommended leather source where I could buy some leather to make a nice sheath for some multi-tools in my collection?

Years ago, I used to have a Tandy Leather Store in my heighborhood, but they are long gone.

Thanks

I'm with Zed, you can get all manner of nice things from op shops, in fact, I hope to do just that this week and make a little sheath for one of my knives.

Another option would be disposals stores.

A lot of stuff scrounged from old bags and cases is chrome tanned , which is more corrosive to steel than vegetable tanned . It doesn't wet mould well , and will rust the heck out of your stuff if it gets wet . 6-8oz vegetable tanned is the best long term bet ( oz per square foot ) . Most stuff you scrounge from old stuff is about 3-4oz , and is often made from split leather . Most of the structural strength is found in the grain .

Thanks for all the answers and suggestions so far fellas.  Up here in Maine, (the end of the earth sometimes) stuff does not make it like it used to.  It seems less and less resources are available to DIY, without ordering/buying on-line for materials.

I'd rather buy sight seen as opposed to sight unseen.  BTW, I order many things online.

I never thought Tandy was still in business.  Although their website seems extaordinarily slow, I registered for an account and will prolly order up some leather strapping.  One of which, I'll make myself a new belt.  The one I made about 20 years ago has "shrunk" to just about to the point where it's a struggle to make it work.  I still have some old leather working tools from years ago as well.
