Car boot finds
on: May 30, 2010, 01:56:58 PM
I actually kept my eyes open today and this is what I found at the car boot sale   :)

The top 'army' knife has 1937 on one side of the blade
and on the other..
G (then what might be a little crown) R
Rodgers & sons
6Norfolk ST
Sheffield England

The marlin spike has what looks like
556607 stamped on the side

Anyone have a link or more information please?  :tu:

The 'Hippo' knife has cheap scales but has a good 'snap' to it
it has
Richards
Shefield
England on the blade

The slippy has
Solingen
Germany
and
Rostfrei
Stainless
Inoxydable
on the large blade
Rostfrei
Stainless
Inoxydable
on the small

This poor little knife has had a bit of a beating and needs someone to take it to pieces and remake it, poor thing  :(

I don't want to do anything too rash with the army knife until I find out a bit more about it, though the blade is still surprisingly sharp  :o (and has been sharpened a lot)
I think the little Solingen is beyond my ability (it needs someone with a smaller hammer than me)

You've got to love car boot sales.

Be warned, they can become addictive but at the same time I consider them a good form of mild exercise :D

Your BAK looks to be basically the same pattern as mine except yours is a little older hence the different scales.

The Richards knives are found in abundance throughout the UK (but without hippo ;) ) as once upon a time they chucked out more penknives than anyone else in he country. Back when every tourist attraction had a branded pocket knife for sale amongst the keyrings and bookmarks you could put good money on it having been made in the Richards factory.

Of course Solingen was the main competition for Sheffield in the mid 20th century so you get quite a few German blades around.  They are normally of respectable quality so you might want to have a play with that little one.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Neil,
Is the Solingen slippy, any good to you?
I will happily send it to someone that could appreciate it
It needs a lot of TLC, I think it needs stripping right down and repairing  :salute:

I like the car boot sales all kinds of interesting stuff..... spoons, files, etc etc  ::)

Very kind offer Tony but I'm good for slippies needing TLC, bit of a backlog actually  :-[

You might not feel you're up to it now but pop it in a drawer and chances are in a couple of years you'll look at it in a different light :tu:

Found a bit of old fence post that had rotted through at the bottom

It's sitting in a little puddle of olive oil at the moment
