Welcome to my favourite thread Gerhard  :salute: :D

That is an ARPAX which stands for Air raid patrol/prevention axe
These were made in WW2 and were issued to air raid wardens for rescue duties (and firemen)
They were made by a few different companies e.g. ELWELL, CHILLINGTON but I’ve not heard of ANGUS

Can we see some pictures of yours Please  :tu:

Hi

Thanks for that!

I will definitely post pics, just struggling with.......technical difficulties...  Forum password saved at work and forgotten, but I can't access the hosting sites from here...
Photos already taken, have no fear....

Cheers
Gerhard

Hi

I gave it the pointy bit at the bottom after removing what was left of the rubber handle, same rubber handle that could apparently protect/isolate you from 20 000V.

The electric fencing we generally live behind is 15 000V as far as I know, and I always hope  >:D the thief that left it behind got a small HELLO from the fence thanks to the stuffed handle.
We can dream  ::)

A big +1 on that

Thanks for the pictures Gerhard, I've never seen an 'ANGUS' before  :salute:

Picked up a few bits this morning  :)
A chunky little splitter of a hatchet
Four paint tin openers, 3 Stanley (I’ve never seen one with a yellow handle before ) and a Falcom

At the bottom a Tengtools ‘Stanley knife’ and a slightly knackered OKAPI I picked up from a second hand shop last week

Love that eclipse handle. I will have to make something like that in near future. Aswell as some clamps.

Had a little play this afternoon

The handle was very very dry, Still need to add a wedge (I have a feeling the wood might be too brittle, will have to play with it and see what happens)
And the screwdrivers have cleaned up well, they just need a little ‘sharpen’   :)

I've been woking on this draw knife for a day or two, added a couple of file handles

Still needs some more work to get it really sharp but its usable  :tu:

Well,  inspired by someone.  I went to the second hand store, and got myself five files. And local hardware store had something for sale, so got couple clamps and file handles for good price.

Ended making toolchest tonight. I will need it soon. ..

How do you ensure the handles don't fall off?

I hammered the little buggers on with a big hammer   :D

If that fails I will use some glue  :)

Hi

Nice finds as always......what about the Okapi?
I miss the one I had as a kid....

In line with this thread, my dad found a cleaver that belonged to my grandfather, who used it for everything from butchering sheep to cutting corrugated iron sheets.....with the help of a hammer.

I found it in the garage, when I was a kid, restored the messed up edge to a certain extent.
Forgot completely about it, but from the markings on it I was planning to turn it into a war ax of some sort - thankfully I didn't.
My dad admits with shame that he most likely messed up the edge in the first place, but all is well because that's my next project.

Already decided it'll get Cream Denim Micarta handles, I hope to get the same effect as that polished ivory Micarta  seen on some Tops knives.
It was obviously hand forged........and pics will follow, I promise

The Okapi is in pieces in the garage as a future project, it was too far gone to be useful  ::)

Something else waiting for some micarta  ;)

Do you roll yer own?  :D

I've re-done the handles on a cheap DOW knife with Red Bull Denim (nothing to do with the drink), and I'm busy fitting 7-colour micarta (black, purple, maroon, blue, mustard, yellow....and another I can't remember) scales on a UC Ronin ninja sword machete.
Not 100% happy with my colour arrangements, so I'm using it on this cheapy.
REALLY enjoying making micarta, but I have to stop myself because as soon as I make it, I need something to fit it to.....and I'm not there with making my own blades yet.

Hi Sparky

The very first material I bought was zombie green and neon orange.....thought it was canvas (no lighter with me  >:D ) but turned out to by synthetic.
From my research I thought it would flop, but turns out it works fine........only issue being it compresses a lot, so my orange micarta turned out very thin (3mm about).
No idea what I'm going to use it for.

Bought the cream denim today and I think it'll be a winner.
To be perfectly honest I'll get to the pics next week, I'm in the middle to planning/packing for a trip this weekend.....
Taking a drive to collect my very first custom made knife from Camp Gecko (Gecko Knives) - (slightly early) 40th birthday gift from me to myself. :gimme:

I've twice had the resin start to set while I'm still layering, and once not enough resin.
If you consider I'm sitting on my arse under a palm tree with a piece of cardboard for a working surface, SS camping mug for resin container, my results are bloody excellent.
I use a CitroSoda measuring thingy for the hardener, wax paper, 2 pieces of cut-off melamine and G-clamps for a press.  8)
My dogs flee, but the cat and myself seem to like the smell
....the cat can be a problem!

The last lot I made went in the press about 6pm, since it was the most layers I'd tried so far (28) I went as light as I could on the hardener.  Turned out 100%, but 11am that evening I was still pretty worried it was a flop.

BTW......I used your wrap-it-on-the-handle method with some leftovers on a cheap-smurf hatchet, worked a treat!  :tu:

Cheers
Gerhard

Cat micarta
I’m not being nasty as I like cats but I can’t see you getting resin off a cat

Yes I’ve had it harden too quickly and I’ve run out of mixed resin  :ahhh
I have cut down on hardener in the past to slow the process and the micarta has not set so I left the micarta in the press for a week and its turned out OK

This probably won’t help you sitting under a palm tree but the resin takes longer to set if its cold   :tu:  :D

We need pictures Please Gerhard, post them in the micarta thread if you like (try not to cover your camera in resin)

This morning was more or less just a waste of time and petrol
I have not seen so much crap in a field since I did some work at Thames water authority sewage treatment plant

But...
A nice A-grade Ash hammer handle, a good handful of wet an dry and a Stihl plastic wedge
