I'm not looking for the most effective, just the one you think of first when you think of zombie killing!

When I think of hard core zombie killin, the very first thing that pops in my mind is strapping a lawn mower to my chest and wading through a sea of zombies, shredding them all to pieces like they did in Dead Alive.

Either that of having a priest that knows kung fu leaping off the graves in the cemetary screaming, "I kick ass, for the Lord!!"
“Do not go gentle, into that goodnight.  Rage....RAGE against the dying of the light!"

I'd luv a BFG or rocket launcher, shotgun, bulldozer but come on, how long can they last?

ammo, gas, parts will eventually run out. I have to go with a big blade. (Klingon Batleth would be nice)

(it's the gift that keeps giving) ;)

I remember the first time I used the BFG in Doom, I took a long shot and they were still moving, so
I got real close...(you know what happened then ::) )

I would have a squad of terminators down on the ground and some snipers from the SAS and Navy SEALS on the high ground while I drive around in a M1 Abrams with Iron Maiden, Manowar and Apocalyptica in the back playing some nice zombie killing tunes when I run over the zombies.

That or a flamethrower

shotgun is not my first choice. apocalypse means a LOT of zombies for a LONG time, and shells won't last.
So, a sword backupped by a machete is my choice.
what about gauntlets, bucklers and upper torso armors?

Traditionally, I think of the 12 gage too - there's something about that hoard of zombies coming at you and that moment when you realise you are out of shells and impossibly outnumbered  :o

Going by what I think is the traditional, I'd have to say a chainsaw.

If I was to choose however I would be in a full medival body armor. Dual-wielding a morning-star and sword.

Guess it also depends on what type of zombies you're fighting

Romero's zombies can stopped with a headshot and are generally slow moving. Machetes good here.

Trioxin zombies can't be stopped unless you burn them to ashes...but then the  Trioxin-laden smoke produces more zombies. :P

T-virus zombies are faster and also like to keep moving after a good chop or shot.

Rage virus zombies are very fast and nasty...blood splatterings get you infected so a long shot from far away is a good idea.

more info here to keep you updated on the daily zombie type status.  Read and learn....your life may depend on it ::)

I don't think shotgun nor any type of melee weapon when it comes to Zombies......I don't want to get that close unless I have to. I am all for taking them out at range and yet still have the ability to lay down a wall of lead if they manage to get close so I voted "other". Part of my anti-Zombie kit consists of plenty of ammo and this...........

.......and if by then it comes to close range these two will come in to play........

When I think traditional I think of shotgun, crowbar and machete. Three things in abundance here in the states. Now what would I use?. Rifle and pistol, both in .22lr. More than enough power to pierce the skull, light weight which translates into being able to carry more ammo. Low sound signature (comparatively) so as not to damage hearing as quick or bad. Little recoil. Backed up with a war hammer for close and nasty. The flat end has enough mass to crush a skull and the spikey end punch right thru one.
I would say avoid medevil plate armor, if you got swamped it would be too easy to tear the plates from the leather straps. Go with a good riveted chain mail, like the ones they use for shark diving. If a shark with their pointy and serrated teeth aren't getting thru, neither is a zombie. Plus its a lighter weight and less restrictive of movement.
