Flapped or Flapless??
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:50:18 pm »
Amici,
For those of you who still carry the traditional lockblade style folder, aka "Buck" knife, I am curoius what do you prefer, flapped or flapless?

The open type holster style have seemed to become quite popular within the last couple of years, but I do have some thoughts and concerns about this, what do you all think?

Cheers,
Serge

never tried a flapless sheath before although it looks promising.  My first one I'm speculating
might be made from kydex.

Got to be flapped otherwise I'd be panicking and checking the tool hadn't fallen out all the time :)

I have never tried it out, but I can't see myself being comfortable with a flapless pouch.

Amici,
The first flapped sheath is for the Buck 110, the open style holster has an inlay of rattlesnake as well as suede lined for the Buck 112.

The "pancake" pattern I use to carry the Uncle Henry LB7, a very tough competitor to the Buck 110 series..

All three are of course custom made from vegetable tanned leather, hence no tarnishing as compared to factory made sheaths..

Personally, I prefer flapped over the open holster style, although they are form fitted and seem that it would be impossible for them to tumble out, but I have always been tormented by those two most terrible words, "WHAT IF" and that's a chance although pretty, I don't think I'd like to take, especially when stuck in the middle of the woods somewhere and then..

Cheers,
Serge

Flapped.  This tends to be a necessity for me, as I only carry nylon sheaths - if it's being used for work or outdoors, I never carry a leather sheath.

Amici,
Well I just picked up another pouch sheath for my new Buck 112FG Ranger, and I have to say that I no longer have any worries of going flapless.. The pouch is constructed in such a way that it is nearly impossible for it to fall, snag, or any other way for the knife to become lost.. The more the sheath becomes form fitted to the size of the knife, material memory kicks in. Plus it's also easy to withdrawn the knife when needed..

In closing if you want to try the newest in folder carry, try flapless. Sure it's not for everyone, but if you get a quality pouch sheath from a professional leatherman you'll be quite happy with the results..

Cheers,
Serge

Flapped.  I like to be able to move without fear of my gear falling out.
