Surge getting the axe?
« on: July 19, 2010, 02:53:51 am »
Is LM surge getting the axe now? There's a big sale on LM surge in a store chain in Canada, and most are sold out by now. Some people tried to get a rain check, but store employees say they won't get any more in since it's discontinued.

So with ST300 supersedes core, anything on the horizon for surge?

If it gets discontinued...

It'll be sad to see it go.... but on the other hand; the Surge IMO always had plenty of room for improvement.

Hopefully we'll get a civilian MUT to fill it's spot.... what would that be?   a CUT ?  Bah   let them come up with the name...

As long as it has the carbide inserts, hammer & long driver bits I'll be all over it.

I haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't be surprised.  IMHO, of all of the current models, only the Wave is safe, and even that may see some future improvements.

It would be odd if it was - they're sold at Wal-Mart as well, and I haven't seen any clearance sales there.

I can see why they would stop it but then there's no direct replacement

The ST300 is a whole lot of multi but lacks outside, OHO blades and of course scissors.

I hope they don't; I'm happy with mine  :tu:  :multi:

I'm sure the MTO management will get any info available  ;) :salute:

Wal-Mart isn't a good indicator...we still have Cores in most of our local ones, and they've never, ever been on sale.  I watch :P

The Walmart stores in the northeast of the US stopped carrying Surges about a year ago.  I remember they were selling them for $50.  It's my personal opinion that the Surge is too large for the average multi-tool carrier and as such there isn't a wide market for it, so your retail chains may be less willing to carry it.  I doubt that it would be discontinued though as it is a well engineered tool and definitely has a faithful market for it

I would surely miss the Surge if it were discontinued. It's a great multi, very useful, and I'm surprised to see it go  :salute:

For me the Surge is the best overall multitool in Leatherman line.
Its big, heavy and strong, heavy duty multitool.
I really like it! :tu:

There's another possibility thou, the store clerk could've mistaken surge for core, which is discontinued. And we know how much the clerks in big box store knows about their product.

At this point I guess we'll all need to keep an eye on the LM site and see what happens.. I'd like to see them fix the glitches or introduce something similiar than to see it completely go. But if it does, they'll be plenty of Surges floating around for quite a long time to come...

Cheers,
Serge
