old new wave?

The post-2004 Wave had a minor redesign a few years ago to fix the plier retention tabs in the handle because of issues with them bending.

If there was one feature I;d change on my Wave 2.0 would be to remove the never used flat screwdriver blade and replace it with an awl /w thread loop.

Don't have the tools to modify the flat screwdriver blade into a make-shift awl w/ thread loop or I would of long ago.
Anyone know where to get such and awl blade to fit into a Wave?

Me too!

Here's my Wave, along with little Wavey Junior.

(Image removed from quote.)

Me too!

I can do that too, but with an older version

Another Wave fan here!

No pics, but I have

Old Wave
Old New Wave
New New Wave
BO Wave
Damascus Wave

(and a coupla Charges, which, in my mind, are just Wave variants)

Best pliers based MT format IMO

Not only Charges, Mr. Whippy but  Surges also. :D

From left - right :
- (Old) Wave USA stamped
- (Old) Wave Tool stamped
- Wave 20th Anniversary
- Wave 25th Anniversary
- (New) Wave
- (New) Wave w/ cap crimper
- (New) Wave BO
- (New) Wave BO w/ cap crimper

I love the Wave and Charge Series,  as they have the same based tool inside..
and IMHO, it's the best multitool with their nice size, weight, and design.

I'm in!  I have an original Wave that was my only multi and edc for about 5 years.  Then I found this place and it's been down hill from there.  It's now retired in favor of newer models, but I still get it out to reminisce from time to time.  Mine is an early 2004 model, so it must have been one of the last produced before the change over to the newer model.

My wife has a New Wave which she uses and carries quite often.  I don't get along too well with the newer model, but I'm thinking of moding one to include dedicated drivers which would make it more appealing to me.

Anyway...  LONG LIVE THE WAVE!   :multi:

How to tell the date on a wave?
I know I have the old version, but how old I wonder?

Look on the inside of the handles; deploy the inner tools and you should see four numbers; the first two numbers indicate the month, while the last two indicate the year the handles were stamped out. :)  The handles might've been stamped in different months/years, too, so it just depends. :)

I saw the 1003a, but didn't know how to decode.
Thanks Sazabi!

The "A" and "B" tags have been used on and off; thus far I've seen Waves, primarily, with the tags, though I do recall either a Mini Tool, ST200, Juice, or some other tool with similar end annotations. :)

It was my understanding that Skeletools were not stamped with date codes.  Someone at one time had mentioned to Leatherman to begin stamping them, due to the fact that we, the collectors, like things like that.  I don't believe it came to fruition, however, due to mostly a lack of space on the inner handles to allow for stampings.  Don't quote me on this last bit, because there may very well be some with date codes, I can't say either way, though, since I've not even handled a Skeletool in person. :/

at the risk of getting smacked, I like the waves better than any of the charges, and yes that includes the tti! The charges feel obease after carrying a wave.

ive never owned one but thought it would be what i end up with, but after having a few MT's now ive still gone back to wave, i find its got all the tools i need, i dont use a awl so no need for one, i use the scissors now and then but do carry a classic but its nice to have scissors on your main tool as like when i go camping next week angie will take here keys and i wont so i wont miss the classic, i use both saws , the diamond file gets a lot of action, drivers are a must and with added modded bits i get the extra reach, the main blade probably gets the least use, but OH is handy, the pliers are spot on as are the cutters, i was cutting bicycle spokes a few days ago as making wire lugs for a old style watch case and they cut them easy, all in all a great alround tool,

here is my home made bit kit,

The first multi tool I ever bought was a new Wave.  I got it on my birthday.  I have the pocket clip/lanyard and bit kit with extension for it.  There is no doubt that it is a very nice multi tool and I am happy with it.  It is not as robust feeling or as smooth as my Sog Powerlock but that is ok. The only real complaint I have is that the tools can be hard to open for someone with short or non-existent fingernails.  :)  That is not the fault of the tool, I just have to learn to not bite my nails.    I know that I have a quality multi that will serve me well.  No I do not carry it everyday, but that is why we have a few to choose from and use, right?  :)
