squirt p4 play in tools
« on: August 23, 2010, 02:44:47 pm »
hi

i just bought a squirt p4, i've wanted one for a while and got it because LM are not making it anymore (replaced by ps4 which is nice nice because it has scissors but i don't like LM scissors, i carry saks for that and i wanted the awl) and the blade, file and awl have a lot of play in them

i bought a squirt s4 a few years ago as a gift and don't recall it being like this, is it normal for these tools to not lock up tight because for the money i paid i'm not happy?

thanks a lot

I would try to exchange it from where you bought it  :tu:

You could always send it into Leatherman [Whitby's] and hopefully they can sort it without upgrading you to a PS4.

I would try the seller initially though :)

thanks cerb' i don't know if they'd change it they might just say it's normal.

i might just try to get a refund.

it's my 3rd LM and the third time i've not been happy so i kind of think they're not for me. a shame because i like the designs (nothing else quite like them), just not the quality/quality control

i just wish victorinox made keychain size folding pliers. do you know of any other small (keychain size) folding pliers? i have tried a gerber clutch which was complete garbage and i thought this squirt would be a lot better and it is better but it should be a lot better than it is: big surprise and disappointment

thanks man

Hi quinton..
Both my P4's locks up nice and tightly, so I think you should go back and try to get it exchanged as cerbera said.  :)

Found a similiar thread looking for keychain pliers on another site.

Here's some of the recommendations.

SOG CrossGrip

SOG Micro Toolclip Coming Soon

Micro Tech 6 in 1

In addition here's some of my own recommendations.

Gerber Clutch

Gerber Vise

These are obviously bigger than the Squirt line but may be worth a look.

Leatherman Juice and Freestyle

Hope you get sorted quinton  :tu:

Well you just had me looking at my P4 and, while some of the tools have a tiny bit of play, it's nothing I'd be worried about.

Gerber are the other main maker in the mini pliers line, though Bear & Sons and SOG amongst others have also dabbled.
Some you might want to consider;

Gerber Clutch: http://www.multitool.org/gerber/keychain-tools/gerber-clutch.html
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,1798.0.html
Gerber Vice (as per the Splice but with pliers): http://www.multitool.org/gerber/under-3.5-inches/gerber-splice.html
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,18843.0.html
SOG Crossgrip (discontinued I believe): http://www.multitool.org/sog-tools/small-tools/sog-crossgrip-and-crosscut.html
Mini Buck: http://www.multitool.org/miscellaneous-tools/small-tools/buck-model-350-mini-bucktool.html

I'm not going to endorse any of these as I don't own them but I hope the links help. :)

My P4 has very little play.I would recommend the Gerber Clutch which IMHO is pretty good for the price but I see you did not like it. I've found mine to be quite sturdy.
