Goin' Kayakin' today!
« on: September 09, 2007, 01:14:37 PM »
I am going to go a little farther than I did before, and I'll be starting out soon, and maybe gone for a while.  I'll post pictures when I get back.

The red arrow is where I start, the blue arrow is the farthest I've gone and the yellow arrow is my goal today.  I know it doesn't look like much, but it's an hour's worth of paddling to get to the blue arrow, and remember, I have to paddle back too!  I figure 4 hours should be a pretty good run....

Gotta get as much in as I can before the weather turns sour!

Well, it was a washout today unfortunately.  I did get out, but I barely made it to the second lake before packing it in.  It took me three quarters of an hour to get to the big lake and back, something that should have only taken about twenty minutes.  The wind was much stronger than I anticipated, and the waves were pretty substantial as well.

Plus, my GPS batteries died halfway across the lake I start on, which isn't that important, but I do like to monitor my speed.  Then, when on the next lake, some twit in a powerboat dropped the hammer about 30 feet from me, making a wake that was higher than my kayak.  Fortunately I managed the 90 degree turn into the wake in time, or I would have capsized.  As it was, I was swamped pretty good.  Good thing I don't have SCUBA gear or I'd pay a little midnight, underwater visit to his boat some night soon as a thank you.

Then, when I got back to my end, the waves buffeted the boat so bad that I did capsize as I was trying to get home, which left me with lots of water in the boat, which I spent the next twenty minutes or so bailing out.

Still a damned fun day though!

Whitewater huh?  I was almost doing that today!  There were more than a few whitecaps on my lake!

Good luck getting out- whitewater rafting is one of the best experiences available, and a damn site more intelligent than jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!

I didn't get any pictures today unfortunately... I spend the whole time trying to fight the waves.

It must really sap your morale comming up against the waves, at least when I'm cycling uphill I can see myself making progress, but with heavy wave's i'd guess station keeping's about as much as you can hope for ???

Yup- lots of times it seems like you aren't getting anywhere at all.  Luckily on my lake there are marker buoys for the races, so you can see that you are indeed making some progress, just not much!

I'd really love to do some kayaking, there's just something about making your own progress without an engine, even if it is knackering ::)

Little to no progress today I'm afraid...

Lots of fun, but unfortunately you need to really pay attention to the weather conditions too.

Some do, but they are designed for it.  If I tried to put a sail on mine I'd capsize!
