Japan riveted PST
« on: August 29, 2010, 01:00:20 pm »
I've wanted one of these for ages and Dennis was able to fix me up with one  :tu: As you can see its in as new condition with box , sheath and user guide  :D  I'm sorry Ben but its going to stay that way  >:D Its going to be displayed alongside another treasure I have ...... a BO non cap crimper PST  :D I have 6 PSTs now and can see why DaveK has quite a few , they are very addictive .

  One thing I'm not sure about is the box states 1985 on it but I thought they werent made in Japan until 1986  :think: can anyone confirm this please ?

Right without further dilay heres the pics  :D

Wow, a real piece of history you've got there Duncan! :salute: I cannot believe there are many of those left around that are still complete with the Made in Japan box! :o  Congrats! :cheers:

As regards manufacturing dates, here it is straight from the man himself:

"From day one, in 1983, we have had our factory here in Portland, Oregon, from which we produced more than 10 million PSTs.  From late 1985 until early 1989, in an attempt to fill exponential demand, we also had about 300,000 PSTs produced in Japan.  The easiest way to identify the Japan PSTs is that they used rivets, with smooth heads, instead of pins and screws, with knurled heads to connect the blades and jaws to the handles."

Yours is only the third or fourth Japan box like that I've seen Dunc. I've never seen any other packaging with Japan on it.

Yeah the papers and box plus sheath makes that a much more rare find than just a Japanese PST by itself :o Thanks for sharing Dunc :tu:

I posted the pics up on LMs facebook page just to see if someone would say " Leathermans aren't made outside the U.S " or words to that effect and sure enough I've already been told it must be a fake  :rofl:

It's clearly a fake ::)

That big lettering is a clear giveaway...   better send it to me for proper disposal...wouldn't want such a blatant fake in circulation. >:D
