Evil's pocket knife: A project with no name..... yet
on: August 30, 2010, 06:55:26 PM
Hey gang. Evil here again. It's not everyday that I need to carry a plier based tool. I set out to create the ideal pocket knife for me that would have everything I want and nothing that I don't. First off, I wanted it to be as light, if not lighter than a Skeletool. While being small and light, I didn't want that to mean frail and weak. Also, although I will be using a clip, I wanted it to be very pocketable, if need be. Going for simplicity this time around, I wanted a no frills lightweight tool that meant serious business. Weighing in at 125.1g/4.42oz I accomplished my goal of being lighter than a Skeletool (142.7g/5.03oz) and even a Freestyle (127g/4.48oz). So what was I able to pack into this little lightweight tool? Far from being a slouch, this little tool boasts some of the largest tools of the big boys and of course some of my own, it has the saw, file and serrated blade that I modified with a guthook and thumbstud for one hand opening from a ST300, scissors from a Surge and I designed a monstrosity of an awl with dual cutting edges that can drill/ream huge 9/16" holes that I fabricated out of CPM154. I use drivers a lot, which was one of the main reasons I set out to do this project. Oftentimes I need the extra reach. I made a locking, multi-angle bit driver (90,135,180 degrees) which holds a double ended 3" inch long D2 toolsteel driver that actually folds up into the tool. I can't think off hand of any other multitool that has a 3" inch driver that actually folds up into the tool and is always ready for use and not something you have to add on. I absolutely hate clumping on my tools so I had to fabricate special washers as well. Keeping it as compact as possible, it is no longer, wider or thicker than it had to be. I have a pet peeve about wasted/unused space on my multitools. The clip system I designed for Project Skeletool has proven failproof and I trust it implicitly, so I decided to incorporate the same clip system on this tool. It is so light, I forget it is even there. Another plus is that I can leave the same exact clip on my side and swap the Skeletool for the new tool or vice versa in the blink of an eye. It is about 90% done. Still need to do some polishing, bead blasting and sharpening along with the freehand engraving once I figure out a name for it. I have been test EDCing it while in the construction process and love this little thing. Thought I would share a preview pic until it is done. In case you're wondering, the blob at the bottom is my hand holding the tool  ;)

lol, thanks Andreas. You answered before I could even reply. In all seriousness though, it really isn't everyday that I need a tool that is plier-based with me. Like when I ride my bike for example. I have a full set of specialized tools in my bag. I like to think of this as more of a lightweight but heavy duty pocket knife.....

Is that an awl....or a spear!?
I actually consider it one in the same. From someone who once never found a good use for an awl to someone who insists on having one on every tool, I have been playing around with different designs to cater to my needs. A good quality awl is like having a drill with you at all times. I am always making holes for various reasons. After the success of the monster awl I created for my Wave (Surge awl in process), I realized that I could never have too big of an awl. This awl could absolutely serve tactical purposes. It does in fact have a spear-like tip as it is sharpened and tapered equally on both edges. Compared to the awls on other multitools, this is a true monstrosity. I have been fabricating the largest awls possible that will fit into my tools down to the millimeter. This particular tool happened to have room for a beast such as this..... ;)

LOL, you're an evil tease. :D

Pics soon, however I ran into a little obstacle today. After looking at it put together, I realized just how much I don't like the Leatherman knurled pivot bolts I had been using. Not just the fact that they require specialized tools, I personally don't find them asthetically pleasing on the larger framed tools :td: :td: (just my personal opinion, of course)  My OCD along with my being a perfectionist simply won't allow me to use the knurled  LM bolts. It'd drive me crazy to no end until I finally changed them to my liking. Anyone that has tried to source sex bolts (yes, they are actually often called that) knows they aren't easy to find, let alone in the configuration you want. Needlesstosay, I will be fabricating my own bolt system for this tool. Gonna be a lot of work for such a little part lol. If you haven't noticed by now, I never do things the easy way.....  ;)

On a related note if anyone ever comes across a source of 2.5mm SS sex bolts please let me know.  Thank you :D

Another perfect example. They're not easy to find, are they Neil? I know I could search high and low both in real life and on the net and know beforehand I'd have a near impossible time finding what I am looking for. Necessity is the mother of invention, which pretty much is always the case for me lol. Not really looking forward to the work involved. While I will be using stainless steel bolts and washers which I will have to machine into shape, I am going to go with brass for the actual sleeve as it is a material I could easily drill and tap with threads. Drilling through something that is 3/4" made out of stainless steel with such a small bit in itself would be a very difficult task, let alone tapping it with threads afterwards.....

That sounds like a whole bundle of no fun  :-\

I can get 3mm ones (close enough to make turning down feasible) but 2.5mm, nope, nowhere :(

I have a set of SOG scissors I was going to use for another project and did a little measuring. It uses the same size pivot bolt as many of the Leathermans. There are probably other smaller SOG's I am unaware of. I never got into using any of their tools so I really can't comment on that.....

Thanks Mat! It is nearing completion. So many of the possible names have already been used in one way or another, so I will still have to figure that part out. Thanks for the suggestions!

Perhaps they are special order if you contact them direct rather than off the site.  Still, I can't imagine those pivots being as small as 2.5mm even on their tiny models  :-\

The sex went great last night... sex bolts, that is
Reply #23 on: September 01, 2010, 08:35:33 PM
No more worries about the sex bolt situation. I wasn't looking forward to the work but here are the results. Custom bolts and washers are stainless steel. I machined matching bevels etc until I got them looking they way that I wanted. Sleeve is brass. Started off with solid brass rod, drilled, tapped and turned. The sleeve also has two opposing flat sides so it is unable to rotate in the frame. One step closer.....

~ evil ~

In case you're wondering. In the background is the thumbstud I fabricated for the serrated knife residing in the notch of the frame.....
