The Titanium Goodies Post
« on: September 05, 2010, 05:02:08 AM »
So i started to add a bump to GG's 2009 Ti gadgets post but i got the "make a new thread red lettering/120 days old" so here it is. The Spork post got me yearning for Ti goodies. I ordered a folding My-Ti spork from Brunton after i saw a pic of it.

I'm also eyeballin a Snow Peak Ti cup.

So what do you have your eye on or show your Ti gear?

these Salsa Ti skewers look good too. Lighten my Trek up a few ounces as it all adds up.

I got this for Christmas. It is very light and works well on top of a stove.

My absolute favourite Ti kit has to be these:

I use them all the time and they weigh nothing. I love my spork too but the chopsticks are more versatile.

What are the Ti mugs like for heat transference? I can't really justify buying one (it's a want not a need) as I'm not likely to need to carry one around with me.

John, they are the Alpkit ones at £8.50. I have no idea if you can get them cheaper, mine were a present from Nuph - I think she got them cheaper but she has ninja internet shopping skills.

If I had to buy another pair I wouldn't hesitate to pay the £8.50. They are more than worth it for the use I get out of them.

On a side note, they come in a webbing pouch, Nuph made a great mod by adding a velcro extension so that I can keep my spork in the same pouch.  :tu: Simple but very clever  :D I think she posted pics of it ages ago.

Tbh - it's just a knife, fork and spoon - not many variables there I don't think :D

I paid about a tenner IIRC - it's been a while :)

The TI cup is good on the stove for ultra lightweight hiking. The downside is that because the walls on the mug are so thin, the contents cool quite quickly.

Whilst the mug is nice to have, I probably would not have bought it for myself. I have double wall stainless steel mug which is not much heavier that the TI mug, and it keeps things hotter, longer. Can't be used on the stove though.

Dave - That is a nice cutlerly set    Must get a set sometime.

Oddly when I asked about heat transference I was thinking of burning my lips trying to drink my coffee, it hadn't occurred to me that it would go cold quickly. Doh! I like the fact that it stays hot in the double skinned stainless steel mug. And that they're not £25  :D I still have Ti jealousy though  :)

I read on the Alp kit site that coffee tastes odd in Ti mugs...anyone verify this? Or are they just being china mug snobs?  :D

Don't know about coffee tasting funny as I don't drink the stuff (Galaxy hot chocolate tastes fine).

Heat is a problem when using the cup as a heating vessel. For drinks, I use a trangia kettle to heat water, but for soup etc, I can use the mug and eat with spoon.

Keeping things hot is another matter, and I much prefer a double walled mug. Snow Peak make a double wall TI mug. It is very nice. Snow and Rock used to have them, they were about £42.

Basically Alpkit used to sell them for around £6, then they obviously caught on that we would pay more! So I did pay less, but can't find them for that price now :(
