I tend to agree with you on a baton, although for different reasons.  Our experiences are similar, but probably differ in some key areas.

First and foremost, the typical ASP style expandable baton has several features that mean they are not as effective as a standard straight stick.  First off, the majority of the weight is concentrated just ahead of the handle, not on the head of the baton, meaning that there's not as much centrifugal force built up in a swing, meaning less force on impact.  Second, force tends to gravitate towards the weakest point, which on a friction fit baton is in the joints, so every impact tends to cause the baton to weaken.  The loosening of the joints on each impact increases exponentially until the baton collapses on itself.  It's not often you have to make that many hits with it, but the fact is that the impact is absorbed by the baton, not the target.

Because of all of this, I'm not a huge fan of the ASP baton, and when, on rare occasions I do carry an expandable, it's usually the Winchester.

This thing has a giant metal head on it that at least increases the centrifugal force generated, and larger diameter means it has more surface area to absorb the impact, meaning it won't fail as quickly.

Still, I prefer a straight stick, and my stick of choice is the Rapid Rotation Baton:

It looks better than a straight stick, which is important as far as public opinion goes- when someone witnesses an impact or two with what looks like a technical weapon rather than a "club."  Plus, with a bit of training and practice, it is a fantastic stick that far outperforms a straight stick or the common side handled PR-24.

All in all, I'd rather stick to spray foam or even a Tazer like device, as it's even more certain and less brutal than even the best stick.

Not that any of this helps find a baton in Berlin though... :D

Oh yeah- the best stick I have is a 6C Mag Light named Wilma.  She's outfitted with an LED bulb, pennies in the tailcap and batteries wrapped in paper.  She also wears a trumble stop (large rubber ring) about 5 inches down from the head, which makes her easy to grab in an instant, and turns her into quite the weapon.  Plus, she's a light, and therefore, despite the fact that she's obviously outfitted for combat, she's considered acceptable in almost every environment.   >:D

When it came to my tool box filling up (my waist is only so big) I opted for Taser and OC over the baton....along with all the other stuff.

Don't think your age helps also.

I'm a big fan of an air powered Kingsman Training Chaser loaded with pepper balls.  Tragically my waist has expanded to the point where I don't have to make equipment choices these days....   :ahhh

As for what I'm doing here, well, I will get to the MUT shortly...

From experience a large mag lite or equivalent put in a reasonably accessible area is often much better suited for your need.  Legal regulations prevent me from carrying a baton, or any defensive chemical devices a night watchman while batons are legal in my area, at night it's generally much easier to deal with someone even if they are intoxicated, or drugged with a bright light when you use it to daze or blind them,
You may also want to read up on defensive baton tactics especially joint locks and pressure points these same tactics work very well with a flashlight, kubaton techniques work well for smaller flashlights (mini mags etc.), using a flashlight as an impact weapon is generally frowned upon and can be seen as assault even when done in self defense, I've never used my light in as an impact device but if you talk to most law enforcement or the average self defense instructor they will tell you that even untrained individuals are capable of defending themselves rather well against a club, not to mention you can possibly kill the person if you strike them in the wrong location. However using it as a defensive device for joint locks and pressure points is seen a a controlled use of force thereby preventing serious injury to yourself and your assailant

In my experience a baton does not make a very good weapon and they are not very reliable.  I've considered buying a new one and carrying it on my belt for walks around the neighborhood at night but no real rush there.  The best solution is to avoid situations and places where there may be trouble.  Unless you're carrying a firearm, the crook is likely to have one up on you as they just don't care at all.

Sorry, I can't help with a shop in Berlin (I have never been to Berlin in my whole life...).

I have told you in another thread that a telescopic baton cannot be carried legal in Germany. It is also considered as a weapon for which you don't need a permission, but you have to be at least 18 to buy one and to be allowed to own one in Germany. I don't know if the sales persons in every shop care about it, but you could get in trouble trying to buy one. Maybe they just sell you one and they don't care about the laws. Maybe they ask about your age and they don't sell you one. If you get one and get caught with one on the street you are definitifely in trouble. Think about it.

CS spray and pepper spray are legal to buy and to carry over here.

Get a thick hickory or oak cane, paint it black so it's stylish and carry that. Cheap, legal and effective.
