Unusual alox knives
on:
December 01, 2010, 09:24:44 PM
In years of collecting alox knives I found some pieces that are rather rare or odd. So I thought it`s time for a special thread for such knives. I hope you add pictures of your unusual alox knives.
I start with a black old style Pioneer that I found recently.

Here is a Wenger SI without any stamps. These were made by mistake and only sold in the Wenger factory shop in Delémont (Switzerland).

And here you see a Victorinox Pioneer with no shield or cross. This double-backside Pioneer was also factory made by mistake.

Another hard to find variation is the black soldier knife. They were made for the swiss railway.

I was very happy when I found this south african soldier knife with Nato-stock-number in brand new condition. Although many of them were made they are hard to find, even in South Africa (as south african forum members have told).

And the last one from my side is the blue 91mm alox Master Craftsman. These ones were made for the dutch army. As far as I know they were part of a survival pack for jet pilots.

Holy cow! these are awesome!
I wish Vic would make the alox 91mm scales a standard option. Any idea of its age?

This blue alox Master Craftsman was probably made between 1975 and 1980. But there exists an even older version with a bail instead of the ring. The first ones were probably made in the mid or late 50s.
I also have 3 different versions of the successor, the blue cellidor Master Craftsman, from about 1985, 1991 and 1998.

This knife came in this morning. The holy grail of DAKs, a "KM"-stamped alox DAK (KM means Koninklijke Marine = Royal Navy). Actually it`s the first one I`ve ever seen. I`ve been searching for this knife for a long time, been to every shop and fleamarket in Amsterdam. I did not even find a foto in the internet. Finally I was lucky

That railway Soldier is fabulous, but the blue alox craftsman is my favourite.

I love that black Railway Soldier, too.
I think someone should post those Lee Valley-exclusive Soldiers-with-Pioneer-scales.

Another one came in today, a Soldier 99 with ring. I`m not sure if these were in a catalog once but they had their own Vic number. I`ve also seen one with a 95 year stamp. But I have no infos about production numbers or times.

Duder, I have a 94, 97 & 98 key ring soldiers. Were they just for civilian sale or did the Swiss Army issue any?

Hi Cannonball,
I think they were only for civilian sale, but I have no reliable infos about them. It`s good to know now in what years they were produced. I`ll send an email to Victorinox and ask them about these knives.
I do know, that between the mid 90s and 2004 Victorinox did not sell as many soldier knives to the swiss army as they did in the years before because the army was reduced is some ways and the army had enough knives in stock.
So I can only assume that they decided to sell these soldiers with ring to the public instead. That`s just a theory...I`ll ask Vic.
