I bought a new Surge a week or two ago & I noticed there was a spot that wasnt black anodized & it seemed it started to turn color/rust?

Can I send it in to LM for them to cover this spot with the coating?

Leatherman does not warranty coatings, no bad how they are. If the tool part was broken and you sent it in for repair, then it might come back as Black Oxide.

But this is a new purchase... so its not like I've had it for a while & used it & it wore off, this just clearly wasnt coated.

And it started to rust & I had to clean it up a little... (which I dont understand since I thought it was a SS multitool?)

I personally consider it abuse of their great warranty to send something as minor as that in.  My advice: don't buy oxide coated tools anymore, only stainless.

Like I said, this isnt from abuse I've given it.  Its from the factory like this.  I figured I would ask.

I thought the surge was a SS multitool with a Black Oxide coating?

It is. That's why I'm slightly confused by the whole situation. I can't see any rust from your picture. It looks like bare SS, which really isn't a warranty issue. I understand that you just bought a new and rather expensive tool and you want it to be perfect, but buying BO is kind of a lottery.

Like a dummy I took the pic after I cleaned it up, but that spot was a reddish brown before I cleaned it up.

It is what it is I guess, I just thought I'd post about it to see what the situation was.

I'm really not trying to be rude or anything but we're not making a connection here...  I just fail to see where there's any real issue  ???

This really is a minor issue .With normal use the black oxide starts to wear in places anyway . I really wouldnt worry about it .Is it possible that while cleaning off the rust you rubbed off a little black oxide ?

Sorry JohnnyS but I agree with what's previously been said  :)

This is from Leatherman's website "This warranty does not cover sheaths, accessories, imprinting, color finishes, cleaning, or sharpening."

If one complete handle was 'BOless' then you may have a case but for one small spot I wouldn't bother. I do know how feel though, if you're paying top dollar you want the tool to be absolutely perfect in every way even if it will naturally wear anyway.

If it bothers you then you should get a black Sharpie and fill it in  :tu:

I think their warranty page says it all; I would send my Leatherman in for the 'complaint' highlighted.

Stainless steel does not mean rustproof steel there, Johnny Science.
