Why the hatred for Velcro?
« on: December 20, 2010, 11:25:28 PM »
In this recent poll/thread most of those who commented were anti Velcro, and I am just wondering what is it that you folk don't like about it?

Anyone care to fill in the blanks?

I don't like it because it wears out over time and the sheath will not close properly.

Velcro Pros:

Tolerant of misaligned mating piece.
Won't scratch walls or doorways if you pass too close.
Rust proof.

Velcro Cons:

Short life
Attracts and retains lint, dirt, hair, etc.
Noisey

I prefer a metal snap.

Wears out, and a little of snow makes it useless.

metal snap here too

velcro looks like crap in about a month or two, nylon sheath doesn't age well, looks ratty where as a well used leather sheath develops patina, cool battle scars.

Case in point...my gerber 600 nylon/velcro sheath is as ugly as a mud fence
my leather wave sheath looks rugged...like if Magnum PI carried a multi or Walker Texas Ranger...that's what theirs would look like. Maybe the Fall Guy too ::)

Button snaps last longer and are more secure, but velcro works well until it gets gummed up or worn out.

My main beef with it is that it totally ruins a lot of other things it comes in to contact with.

Things like soft synthetic materials on coat scuffs for instance. I know this is isn't always relevant when it comes to pouches of course, but if they are anywhere near your clothes it can be an utter PITA :(

I think Velcro has its place in this world. For example my Triple Mag Holder that sticks nicely inside the Velcroed wall in my Fatboy  :tu:  That will not come across the wear and tear of 'outer Velcro'.

It really doesn't age well if used a lot  :-\

The big positive with Velcro as Parnass said it that you don't have to be exact when closing a pouch etc. Also if it is the real stuff it is very secure  :tu:

Just so damn noisy  :ahhh

What most folks here have said: stops being secure when old or clogged up.

BTW I don't hate it, it's just that if I had the pick of two, otherwise identical, sheaths I'd go for the one with a metal snap.
