Home made Paper Micarta - pic heavy
on: January 04, 2011, 06:54:21 AM
I have myself a MORA blade which need a handle. Using the remaining resin I used on my SAK scale, I made myself the 1st tail of paper micarta. Try to keep the colorfull image of MORA knife handle, I used some red and yellow color A4 paper.

The things I had for the project

The resin color turned to dark brown, maybe due to oxidized reaction

Start with yellow color

Wrapping up before compress.

After 24hours

Notice the resin color, it is greenish (like jade) compared to previously yellowish.

The layers (20pcs each layer)

Cut to shape

Ground with drum sander

The finishing and fixing the blank to the handle will be posted seperately.

Oya.. who say I do not have a proper sanding machine?

thanks for watching

LOVE the sander! What a great improv/mod just that is! Oh, and the new handle is slick, too. :)

As promised, the finishing handle of MORA using my 1st made paper micarta. Some reshaping of the handle to balance up the look with the MORA blank.

Thanks

Landroza
Hope you don't mind if I add pictures of my newest project  :salute:
Denim Micata and a thin sheet of white paper Micata to use up the left over resin
The denim has turned out a bit thick to be honest but I guess it will sand down

I did make some canvas micarta but like your case the resin get harden and the mixture with the hardener was not uniform. So the micarta is useless for me now. Will get another can soon..

Not to forget. nice job mate..

Let me ask you guys who have and do make your own micarta; how easy is it to work with? Can you use the same tools you would with wood to drill and sand it?

I was thinking of putting it on something quite chunky like my 'golock'  :tu:

This will be a long term project as I need to heat treat and 'flatten' the steel out first

I need to get my BBQ forge sorted out  ::)
