Uli Steck Titanium Series
on: January 19, 2011, 04:11:47 AM
Hey guys- I see that this one has been announced already, but here are a couple of my pics:

Frankly I think these are excellent, and I can't wait to try them out.  Like the New Rangers, the shield is the lock release mechanism.  I'll be talking to Wenger CEO Peter Hug about them for a formal presentation tomorrow, and I have a few more pics now, but these are just to warm you up a bit.

There are three different models, but basically these have all been designed by Uli Steck, an extreme mountain climber.  You really have to see them in person to appreciate them- I think they are the most exciting thing I've seen all day!

The knife blade looks a bit unwieldy.

Did you get a chance to try and use it?  Is the design supposed to give it an advantage (like grabbing it directly for chopping)?

I can see it could be OHO.  True?

Good question. That sure sounds safer.

Will they have any with regular spearpoint, non-cutout blades?

I think so, but I'm not 100%.  I'll know more tomorrow.

can the wrenchs be used with the blade closed?

It looks that way, but I'll know more tomorrow.

The design allows it to be opened easily from almost any angle or hold position.  It opens very nicely with one hand, and seems like it would be very easy to Spyder Drop.

Will they have any with regular spearpoint, non-cutout blades?

I doubt it at this point, but I'll know more tomorrow.

IMO that blade is just so out of place, If it had a normal sak blade this thing would look beautiful.

I think a lot of people are going to feel this way... It seems like a cool design, but boy does that look dangerous. :o

I think it could be very functional, but I think it certainly doesn't score high on the looks department.

Victorinox and Wenger tend to stick to SOSAKOnline for the most part, while most multitool companies (Leatherman, Gerber, CRKT and SOG) spend an awful lot of time looking in here.  That's not me trying to make us sound important, it is the truth.  I spend a fair bit of time discussing the things that are said here with the various reps form the different companies.

Some agree with what we say, some don't, but they all respect what we have here as an honest, realistic form of feedback on what they are doing.  Because of that, they don't participate simply because they want the things we say here to be completely unbiased.

Don't think for a moment that companies aren't reading this though.  Ask yourself this- if you were a manufacturer, wouldn't you be reading the forum?  :D

I dunno, I think it's kinda cool.  I'm not sure putting the wrench cutouts in the blade is a great idea because of the danger of the blade closing, but the scales are really nice.  Titanium scales, OHO, plain blade please!

yeak, that's ugly. But notice that Grant says "There are three different models", so perhaps the other two models have more sane designs, which with that lovely scales and all would be a winner  :salute:

If there ever was a knife deserving of a blade swap-out this one is it.  :-\
Absolutely beautiful scales, and form, then they have to stick in the butt-ugliest
blade I've ever seen, sorry.

Nope- they all have the same blade design.  As I said, I'll have more info tomorrow, but for now, here's some shots of the signage.

That tells you a little bit about each mode... for example it tells us I spelled Ueli's name wrong in the title of this thread!  :P

Oh, sorry, I should have been more careful with reading the first post.  :-\

The scales do look awesome! BUT...

Great modder fodder. Hit it Neil!
+1

I also think that given the lock release that the linerlock protrudes way too much, but I'm assuming it is for strength.  With a regular blade, I bet the liner could have a much lower profile.

Love the bit driver in the handle.  I like this concept in the other Wenger knives and it's great to see it on a smaller platform. should work with ***man flat bits as well.

The wrench is extra thick so it could maybe be replaced with 2 tools.

Now I just need to try one...
