Benchmade 915 Triage
on: January 21, 2011, 04:54:52 AM
While at the show today I visited Benchmade's booth and I was floored by this new rescue knife, the 915 Triage:

It's available in black too, but I'm really fond of the orange.  But what makes it a rescue tool and not just a brightly colored knife?  How about a rescue cutter opposite the blade?  :D

This knife is sweet!  More info HERE if you want it.

And I want it...

That is a sweet looking knife, if only it had been released 10 days ago when I was spending a boatload of money on knives... :ahhh :ahhh

I guess I will have to pick one up soon though.

Me too, that's why I snapped pics of it and not the all black one!  :P

Interesting, they chose a better steel for the hook than main blade, I think this is the first time I've seen a company does that.

Also makes me wonder how would something like a leatherman nehalem works as rescue tool.

I'm thinking the same thing! Though I just fell in live with the CRKT M16 rescue, and am drooling over the custom griptillians!

I was under the impression that they chose the N680 for its corrosion resistance, though I could be wrong. But I would also like to see some premium steel cutting hooks.

N680 is a bit of an oddball choice for a main steel I'll give you that, but to say it's worse than 440C is a stretch.  It'll maintain an edge better than 440C because of the Vanadium content, even if it's hardened slightly lower.

I got a Triage 815 about two weeks ago.  I read the review in the most recent Tactical Knives and it appeared really interesting.  I've had an AFCK for years and knew Benchmade quality.

The Triage lives up to the legacy.  The main blade opens easily and locks up solid.  The axis lock is fantastic.  I'm not in rescue or firefighting and not likely to need a seatbelt cutter very often.  However the hook is great for cutting cable ties, especially when a bundle of wires are involved and a slip could nick a wire.

I had been carrying a DPx Gear HEST 2.0 for EDC.  The Triage has taken it's place.  In fact, I sold the HEST for enough to make back the cost of my Triage.

Did you get the orange one or the black one?   :pok:

Naturally, I went for orange.  Much easier to spot if I lay it down somewhere while working.

I thought I had bid on a black blade version, but when it arrived it was the plain stainless.  I like the look of the black blade while it's nice, shiny and new, but for a using knife I like plain stainless.  I believe they call the look on this one "tumbled".

Very cool. I really liked this blade and I feel it would make an excellent rescue tool. As stated before by Scattergun, most cops are taught to just use a knife, and this one has serious EDC potential since it's not too bulky with other functions.  For the times when a v cutter is more effective, it has that too.

Overall it struck me as a beautiful piece all around.

I've been carrying the triage as my main work knife for the past year, and it has been great. If I get a chance tomorrow I will try to post some pics of a well used one. (though I will probably forget, I am terrible about posting pics.)

I gave the cutting hook a good workout today.  I had a bunch of cable ties that needed cutting.  I was helping move a power cable that was tied to the railing of the catwalk above the floor of our basketball arena at work.  The hook zipped through the ties and sent them flying.  It took me less time to cut the ties than it would have with my wire cutters and there was no chance of cutting into the cable.

I made a good choice for a EDC pocket knife.  The Triage has powered through every task I've thrown at it in the couple of weeks I've had it.

I'll be interested to see if they offer a mini or junior version.  I can envision a smaller Triage Jr., that would go nicely with dress pants or suit and tie clothing.  Something about 3/4 size with an Emerson style waved blade might be interesting.

I think I found my answer to another post i put up about benchmade. Ive been torn over the Griptilian and the triage. If the hook cutter is a better quality steel than the main blade that says alot for me. If any of you folks are first responders or use the triage with bulky golves, how does it open up for ya. Easy or a hassel?

I can't comment on actual use with gloves since I only handled this knife at the show, but it did seem like a very clean design, and I don't think it would be that hard to open with gloves.  That's just a guess based on experience though, which as we all know can be very different from reality.

Thank you Grant for the insight. Hopefully an army navy store or some sporting store has that sweet orange triage so i can handle the thing.

This is a seriously sweet knife. I haven't managed to get one yet but I have handled them a few times and I really like them.
