Sheffield Tools
on: January 21, 2011, 12:09:41 PM
I didn't just hit the major brands at SHOT this year, I also visited some of the smaller off brands like Sheffield, and I was glad I did.  There's some interesting, unconventional items I would have missed had I not made sure to stop in at a brand many folks have written off.

For those who remember Bob's Cattleman Cutlery, AKA SpyderGuppie, you may be interested to know that apparently this one was designed in house at Sheffield.

UK members will be glad to know that this one is currently a slip joint, however it's still in the prototype stage and a blade lock is under development.

Up next is a tool that also resembles another tool everyone here should know, and as the story goes, there's apparently a reason for it.  Unfortunately I don't know the whole story so I'll have to leave it there.

Folks know I'm not a huge fan of the other tool, but there are a few things I like about the Sheffield version.  First off, I like the spear pointed, recurved blade better, and I also like the spring extracting pliers.  Just hit the small release lever and the pliers fire out and lock into place.

The fold out screwdriver seems better than the sliding screwdriver on the other version- while the other one may have a flathead and phillips I always felt it was way too short on either end to be useful.  As you can see, this one has some significant reach.

I'd rather have one useful driver than two useless ones any day!

Next up is this big red tool.

It looks different, which to be honest, I really like.  It's not the same old tool design that we are used to.  It's also got some neat features not seen on other tools, like the fold out multi wrench.

The corkscrew is nicely recessed- so much so that there's a small lever under it to help pull it out.

The screwdriver bits are also nicely recessed, so there's a small ejector incorporated into it.  Slide the switch forward and the bits slide out too.

Lastly there's the pliers, which are large, beefy and solid.  Oh yeah, and blunt nosed, which means these are designed for heavy use, and they feel up to the task.

This one was just a prototype and there may be some changes for the full production version.  We discussed the potential for a one handed opening blade, but really, I'd be happy to see this one hit the market as is.

I realize that Sheffield isn't our usual discussion fodder, but these actually look interesting and I can't wait to see more.

I like the design of the SpyderGuppie.  That's what the Spyderwrench should have been.  The Zilla-like tool looks substantial.  I'd like to handle that one.

Nice designs!  Hope the execution supports the design.

I wouldn't mind having a play with one of those.  In a tool of that type I think I'd prefer to see a file in place of the blade.

Big red is quirky and that's not bad but its a bit strange having heay duty pliers alongside a corkscrew   That said I really don't see much use for a corkscrew on anthing these days.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I've just upgraded my account- hopefully everything will be back now.

It seems that a lot of other forums are also using my pictures too.

We have considered in the past setting up an in house photo hosting option, but it never went anywhere.  I hate paying for space on someone else's server (Photobucket's) when I have a lot of my own available.  I guess it's time to start looking at that as an option again.

Good idea if it is a viable option, but why not just use several free accounts instead? There's no limit to how many you could open and use as needed.

I thought about it, but this was a bandwidth issue, not a storage issue.  If I opened up a hundred more accounts these pictures wouldn't have come back up until February 1st.

I like Big Red a lot, and the other two intrigue me as well.  I'd like to test that black one and see if I can extract any differences between it and the production version from the other guys.

The non-extract actually looks pretty good, though the cap lifter/screwdriver looks to be hugely over-polished.

Big red just doesn't scream 'quality' to me but I'll be happily proven wrong. :)

No idea on MSRP- I don't think they'd been set yet.  Given the history from Sheffield I'd expect them to be under $40 at the outside.

I'm actually really sorry to read this.

I wish they'd put top quality in and bump up the price a bit

I have very little experience with Sheffield. The ones I've seen weren't all that great, but not bad either honestly. They tend to be priced square in knock-off territory when I see them, but are worlds better. I think they rate lower than Gerber for the most part, but for the money it's probably the best choice. If I had to choose between no-name and Sheffield, I'd take Sheffield every time. For the money I think they are pretty respectable.
