Evolution of the Blast
on: February 06, 2011, 04:01:44 AM
Between its introduction in 2004 and the (reported) :( end of its production run in 2011, the Leatherman Blast has gone through a number of changes and updates. I recently grabbed a newer version, date codes 0510, and compared it to my trusty old standby, dated 0904.

Here are the differences I found:

Early model (0904) on the left, later model (0510) on the right

Sometime around 2009, they changed to a T-shaped lock release lever on the Blast as well as the Fuse. The new one extends across the entire width of the handle, and is therefore easier to depress than the old one. :)

In order to accommodate the wider toggle lever, larger cutouts were added in the handle:

Also, the new lever was given stronger, larger diameter pins to pivot upon:

I'm not sure when they stopped stamping the PAT PEND on the handles: ???

Another change was to the Zytel plastic handle liners. At some point, a small ledge was added for the saw and file to stop against:

The new ledge was molded into all four liners, so in some cases it is not even used.

A not-so-welcome change (IMO) was the file blade. Original files were among the very best ever found, on a multitool or off! :salute: The teeth were perfectly cut and absolutely razor sharp. (left) :tu:  The file that replaced it is "adequate" but nothing to write home about. (right) The teeth look to be produced in a different fashion, and they just aren't as well defined as those on the old file. Again, not a huge deal, but nevertheless... :-\

My good friend JoeBW pointed out to me today that the knife blade was changed too. :) Early Blasts had a blade with the nail nick on the outboard side....

...which for some folks made it difficult to reach the nail nick with your fingernail. :-\

Later, the nail nick was moved to the inboard side of the blade, which made for improved access. :)

Very nice find! I just picked up a like-new Fuse today for $15, and now I wonder if similar evolution happened in its production.

Note these changes didn't all happen at once, but rather over the Blast's entire life span. Which is good right? Incremental changes :salute: and No resting on laurels and all that.

So how is your Blast(s) equipped? :)

Model /date codes / lock levers / PAT PEND? / molded plastic ledges / file blade / nail nicks

Mine:
1) Stainless finish / 0904-0904 /  old levers  / yes PAT PEND / no ledges / old file / outboard nick
2) Black finish      / 0405-0505 /  old levers  / yes PAT PEND / no ledges / old file / outboard nick
3) Stainless finish / 0510-0510 / new levers / no PAT PEND / yes ledges / new file / inboard nick

I'm thinking probably so. :)

I'll get a similar Fuse thread started next. :)

Great spots Bob & Joe  :salute: :salute:.

I gave my brother in-law a Blast for his 50th , I think I am going to have to get one for myself  ::) ::).
Bob there was a issue with the Blast's lock pin failing  hence the upgrade  .

I would be interested too know if there was similar improvements/evolution in the Fuse & Core over their production lifespan

1) Stainless finish / 9-06/9-06 /  old levers  / no PAT PEND / ledges / new file / outboard nick

Looks like I've got one that's somewhere in between yours.

Also, here's some info for your Fuse thread when you start one:

1) Stainless finish / 1210-01-11 / New levers / no PAT PEND / ledges only on scissors side and knife side of scales / inboard nick

That's an interesting thing to note:  the Fuse, for some reason, has the same ledge, but only on one side of each scale of the tool.  Upon closer comparison with the Blast, the reason is evident:  the Zytel handle inserts on the Blast and on half of the Fuse actually add about 1/8" each of depth to the tool.  The Blast has more tools in it, so it has the ledge (which only appears on the thicker handle insert) on all four scales.  The Fuse, however, has less tools and so needs less depth and has only two of the thicker inserts.  The other side of the tool has thinner inserts and so the tool has a slimmer profile.

The reason for the ledge appearing on the Fuse must be that those two large scales are the same stock that is used in the Blast--so any Fuse manufactured after the ledges were added to the Blast must also have those same ledges, even though on the Fuse they serve no purpose.
Treat your tools like a friend--keep 'em by you.  Never let 'em down, and they're always at your side.

Not just yet- the Kick and Fuse are going to be phased out this year in favor of the Sidekick and Wingman.  But, with three of the four in that line (Kick, Fuse, Blast, Core) discontinued, the Blast probably won't last long either.

Hmmm. :-\ I've started to compile the data, but already it isn't making sense. For instance, frugalscotty has a Blast with OLD lock release levers and date codes of 1208-0109

Meanwhile JoeBW has a Blast with NEW levers and date codes of 0409-0509

How can that be? ???

Wait, do you have that right?  That sounds like it makes sense:  Old levers from Dec. 2008/Jan. 2009, new levers from April/May of 2009?  Sounds okay to me, if that were the transition time.
