Can anyone post it alongside another big MT, like a ST300 or a MUT?

How long is it?

A full 8 inches from end to end (203mm) puts it head and shoulders bigger than the ST300 :o

I'm still getting used to the size of this thing. It is definitely a handful. A standard SOG PowerLock is already considered a fairly large multitool, but this Blacktip is much bigger.

Here it is alongside a PowerAssist. The plier head tapers to a longer point...

....and the handle length is much greater.

The Blacktip has two outside opening blades. One is a drop point knife, with a plain edge. It is hollow ground, and has a thumb stud for one hand opening.

The outside opening mechanism looks like that of a PowerAssist, but the blade is not assisted-opening. It does however still have all the fiddly buttons and switches of the PowerAssist. The slider switch must be in the OFF position in order to open the blade, while the button must be in the UNLOCK position in order to fold it back up.

I like gadgets, but I'm not a big fan of this system.

Other tools include a V-cutter, also with a thumb stud, as well as a fish scaler/hook disgorger, a screwdriver/cap lifter, a phillips screwdriver, a can opener, and a 3-sided file.

The file has a groove in one side, presumably for sharpening fish hooks, but it is not a diamond file and the file teeth are rather course for fish hook work...?

The underside of the plier head has serrated teeth. It looks like it would be handy for gripping tightly or crimping fishing leaders.

Here it is compared to the cap crimper section found on the PowerLock or PowerAssist.

The Blacktip Fishing Multi-Tool is made in Taiwan, as are the Paladin tools and other SOG multitools these days. The build quality of the components is absolutely first rate. Better in fact than some older SOG components that were made in the USA in my opinion. There are no rough edges, everything functions smoothly, all the parts have a fine polished finish, etc. The whole thing just exudes quality...

...but some of the design features could be better. For example I find the ON-OFF switch for the outside opening blades to be completely unnecessary, and downright annoying at times. And the mechanism only leaves room for two blades/tools in that handle. And even though one of them is an excellent knife blade, I can't help but wish SOG would have utilized the available space and upsized the blade another half inch or so. (see picture below)

The opposite handle has even more vacant space, which could have been used to make the file blade and the fish scaler nearly a full inch (25mm) longer. Clearly SOG is simply saving costs by using standard-length blades and tools in the Blacktip, but by my way of thinking, if a person is going to go through the bother of carrying a gargantuan size multitool around on their hip, they ought to be rewarded by having biggie-sized blades and tools to work with. On a lesser note, I'm also not a fan of SOG piano locks, or SOG handle flaps, or SOG compound leverage, but can live with all of the above, especially on a multitool that is manufactured as well as this one is.

In conclusion, I find the Blacktip to be a unique tool that would surely be capable of handling any fishing task you throw at it. As far as I know there are no others in its class, and I'd recommend grabbing one if you are a fisherman or a SOG collector.

Thanks for the review and pics!

Like the MUT it's a very intriguing tool, but I have little use for it.
I'm very disappointed with SOG in regards to the knife-side handle. I think one of the most common issues with the Powerlock is that while the OHO outside blades are nice, you're losing four tool slots on that handle, and the Blacktip doesn't even have the assist system, yet still only has two tools on that side.  ::)

These are being sold again.  They no longer have the replaceable cutters like the early ones did.

Is it just me, or are all of the gear covers upside down?
Isn't the little cut out supposed to make accessing the screws easier?
And not accessing parts of the gear easier  ???

I just received mine, and Bob is right, this thing is huge. Because he beat me to the punch, I figured I may as well add a few photos comparing the Blacktip to the West Marine Performance Sailing Tool.

The West Marine is the size of a normal PowerAssist/PowerLock. Both Blacktip and West Marine tools do not feature the spring assist mechanism, even though they have the annoying locking mechanism. I won't get into any details here as Bob has already done a wonderful job describing the mechanism.

The Blacktip dwarfs the West Marine.

Both feature somewhat similar tool load outs. The Blacktip is on the left, West Marine Sailing tool on the right. The file on the West Marine features a shackle key as opposed to the hook file groove on the Blacktip.

Did someone say marlin spike? The sailing tool features a nice one. Guess most fisherman won't sail to their fishing spot, so you get a V-cutter instead.

So there you have it, a quick and dirty comparison between two specialized SOG tools of an aquatic nature. :)

Nice pics Chako! :tu:

Y'know, the most exciting thing about this is SOG's apparent willingness to produce niche-specific tools that are high-quality, in low volumes. :salute: First there were the Paladin series of multitools made for electricians/datacom techs, then there was the West Marine Sailing Tool, and now the Blacktip Fisherman. Each one is made well, and has several unique components made specifically for the intended user group.

I wonder what niche they will make a multitool for next? :)
