Wooden scales for a Wenger DIY
on: April 27, 2011, 04:48:51 PM
I had some free time today so I got a peace of wood, a "precision" saw (I don't know the name of it but it's in the pics) a dremel, a chisel, some sandpaper and started playing. This was my first try at something like this and I'm happy with the results so far. I hope you like it too.

Now I only need to paint it and attach it to a Wenger. Which glue do you recommend? Regular Loctite?

Not sure what would be the best glue  :think: :think: , I am sure someone will chime in.

Paint  :o :o :o , I like the natural look you have mate or are you going to varnish/clear coat them  :think: :think:.

I am REALLY keen to do some wood SAK scales , just have to finish my knife blank project , gluing tommorow  :ahhh :ahhh , I am going to use a Epoxy glue. Knife blank project has been a bit of a saga. Looking forward to dressing some simpler shaped knives  ::) :D :D.

Great pics mate  8) 8) Looking great mate  :salute: :salute: :salute:

Wow!  That's amazing!  I'd use rubber cement.  It holds well, but is removable if need be.

Thanks, guys.  :salute:

@MultiMat

I believe the "paint" is going to be varnish and clear coating. I like the natural wood look better too. Sorry, my english isn't that great in the wood working field  :D .  I've trimmed the inside edges and corrected the "jaggedness" and polished the scales a bit. I'm off to do some "wood protecting" on the scales now.

@Mr. Whippy

Rubber cement  :think: what's that in Croatian again.  :think:    :D :D I believe I know what you mean. Might try that. Thanks  :tu:

That’s some very neat work Enki  :tu:

I would call the saw a coping saw or possible a jewelers saw  :salute:

Have you thought about using some kind of oil instead of varnish (teak or linseed oil) I find it easier to apply  :tu:

Tony beat me too it. ::)

I thought about oil, but decided to only clear coat this one. I already aplied two coats, will sand it tomorrow and apply the last coat.

I tried googling that coping saw and found that it is in fact the fretsaw. :tu: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretsaw

Honestly, I'm not sure. I had a bunch of those it lying around and I decided to give it a try as I thought I'd mess a bunch of those up before I succeeded. It was used as a divider of layers on a pallet of Bramac roof tiles so it could hold up fine. But who knows. I have a peace of oak I intended to use but I liked how my trial run looked so I decided to keep it. I'll use the the oak to make new scales for a Vic Camper, should be easier, less holes to drill out. :D

I have a lot of 'unidentified' wood in various boxes here as well, lots of it got rescued from skips/dumpsters  ;)

Looks like you have a nice solid old workbench to work on Enki  :tu:

Tony my shed seems to have become a haven for Redback spiders  :ahhh :ahhh

Tiny buggers but that red spot on their back screams 'Pissoff'. Normally I open the shed door survey the lay of the land & then stomp on the little feckers . The other day I speed in , wearing shorts  :ahhh & I felt a spider web on my bare leg  :ahhh :ahhh. Hit reverse mighty quick & see a wee little RedBack hit the floor  :ahhh :ahhh. Stompedy Stomp goes Mat. I think its massively unfair that something so small can cause extreme pain  :ahhh :ahhh. If I had not backed back I reckon I defiantly would of got bit which would of meant a trip to hospital & a good old session with MR PAIN  :ahhh.

Info on RedBacks----> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redback_spider

I was retrieving some methylated spirits to clean up my own wood too knife project  :D

Tony my shed seems to have become a haven for Redback spiders  :ahhh :ahhh

I got bitten once just above my temple, I was asleep so I don't know what kind of spider it was, but the doc said it was a spider bite. In just a couple of hours it swelled so hard my right eye was shut. Serious pain and a few shots in the place on which you sit (not the chair) :P followed by pills and a weekly shot for the next month. Not a pleasant experience.  :(

I inherited the workbench and a few tools from my grandfather, he was a carpenter. It usually isn't that tidy as some of my family who are into gardening leave their seeds, seedlings, tools,... on it.  :ahhh :ahhh

It's done. Maybe I should have used a coat of varnish first to give it a darker look? What do you think? Maybe on the next project.

And a few comparison size and with shots with a some of his 85/84mm brothers.

I would be really keen to know what Dremel part(s) you used , in particular what you used to make the holes in the wood for the SAKs pins  :think: :think:
