84mm SAK love
« on: April 30, 2011, 07:41:50 PM »
I am loving my recent 84mm SAK acquisitions.

Golfer
The Golfer came in amazingly good shape so I just cleaned it with a little isopropyl alcohol.  This is one is of the variety without the half stop on the combo-tool as well as the flat ground top on the combo-tool.

Lumberjack (Elinox tang stamp)
The Lumberjack came a little dirty with the scales showing some nasty finger prints "etched" into them.  I used some Brasso and polished the scales to a better finish (not shiny, but no finger prints).

Tinker Small (w/old Phillips can-key)
The Tinker Small was basically destroyed.  The scales were lifting and scratched to death with "C E" carved into them.  The main blade was also bent, and both blades are dinged up.  I scrubbed the hell out of the knife with lots of soap and a toothbrush.  I then went back and tried to polish off a lot of the oxidation from the liners.  After a ton of cleaning and polishing I threw on some black scales I had.  Overall I am happy with the way it turned out.  I also bent the tip of the large blade back so it doesn't contact the other tools anymore.  I'm going to give it a good sharpening and probably use this knife, since it is not in collector shape.

Check out that can key!

Currently I think the 84mm SAK's are some of the coolest pocket knives out there.  Super compact and pocketable and very useful.  Maybe not as robust as the 91mm varieties, but close enough with a much smaller form factor.  If I can locate another 84mm Golfer it will definitely be an EDC knife for me.  It is a real shame Victorinox discontinued the 84mm scissors.  I almost think they work better than the 91mm variety and would allow some awesome knives to be made (such as an Alox Cadet with scissors or a revist of the old Voyageur).

Imagine a 3-layer 84mm Alox knife with the following tool layers:
- Main blade and Combination tool (components of an Alox Bantam)
- Saw (same one on the Lumberjack and the new "Cadet Plus")
- Scissors (same ones on the Golfer and old Voyageur)

This knife would fly off the shelves.  Make it in several colors (Orange, Red, Blue for instance)...and yes, you would have a serious well selling knife.  Does anyone disagree?

Great SAKs and Great Photos!
Thanks.  I actually snapped the photos with my EVO 4G phone.  The 8MP camera HTC put on this phone takes great photos for internet uploading (they don't look as good as my Canon G10 when blown up though).

I should also clarify that in addition to the 'dream' knife I spec'd out, a model with the same tools in cellidor could also support some back spring tools like the Philips driver and reamer.  That would be equally amazing...if not maybe cooler than the Alox knife.

If only someone had made an 84mm SAK with combo, saw and scissors. :dd:

As you might guess I'm also a huge fan of the 84mm size. :tu:

84mm is the best line by far IMO. The tinker small is my favourite sak. When I first got into saks I thought 84's with scissors would be impossible to find, turns out they are more like just a bit difficult (if you know where to look) In fact a search for a sak to fit some 84mm scales that I bought as a result of my naive thinking that there was only one size sak Is the reason I ended up here. So here's to the 84mm's.

Good catches  :tu: Totally agree on the size. One of the reasons I like my Wengers so much is the size 84/85mm just seems so right. I too never realised they came in different sizes and my first SAK was a Tourist. When I upgraded to Deluxe Tinker, even though we are only talking about 1/4" difference in length, I really did wish it had been the same size.

I've recently switched to a Wenger Motorist and absolutely love it.

Oh man, with white scales to boot.  That is one of the most beautiful SAK's I have ever seen. If it had the less common "canary yellow" scales (did they ever even make them in 84mm?) that would definitely be the coolest SAK ever.

Not sure I've ever seen 84mm yellow scales, but it would sure be nice. :)  If I was to be truly pedantic those are actually the older, slightly creamier ivory scales.  The difference is very subtle and can really only be seen when placed side-by-side with the totally white scales.

I'm a 84/85mm man myself. That must be the reason I love wengers so much. One of the reasons I never got a vic compact is that it's a 91mm. If it were 84mm it would be perfect.

You need yourself an 84mm Golfer.
