PVC Sheath
on: May 04, 2011, 12:05:19 AM
I've been trying to make a sheath for the knife in this thread  :salute:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,18067.150.html

I had some 4''PVC waste pipe lying around in the garden, got to work with my hot air paint stripper (scorched it a bit  ::) )

Cut it out on my band saw  :tu:

Glued it together with some electrical PVC glue  :tu:

buggered it up as the glue didn't work so decided to use some brass screws
Then chipped little bits off the front of the handle trying out the fit  >:(

This is my first attempt, I was going to cover it with leather but the screws have stopped that idea, also I don't have any way of hanging this from my belt  :ahhh

As the thing was looking very tatty I decided to rub it down with my sander

Very cool idea Tony :tu:

Can you use something like epoxy resin to attach a belt hanging loop?

I hope Landroza doesn't laugh too much  :D

I brought a patchwork brushed leather coat from a charity shop to make in to stuff (first was for Zed's 'Carrot knife')  :D

I don't have the patience or eyesight for sewing so got some glue out and started playing with the coat and its belt +1 magnet  ;)

The little flap over the back of the handle has a magnet glued inside the leather

I made one out of PVC before. I used cpvc/PVC glue and you couldn't make it come apart with a pry bar.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

My tip for sewing leather. Glue it first then use a dremal with a small bit in to make the holes.

I need a sheath for my new slasher  :D  (this kind has a cutting edge front and back  :ahhh )

A piece of PVC Soil pipe (the walls are around 3 or 4mm thick) after 20mins in the oven at 130c with a weight on top, Remove from oven wearing welding gloves and stuff the blade in, then leave to cool under a flat weight

Cut to shape leaving 'lugs' to fold over

Heat lugs with a hot air stripper and fold over

Sorted  :D

Its rather a tight fit so I have to remember to keep my fingers out of the way when I take it off

I really liked that video but he spoiled it right at the end  ::)

Its not too hard to do and you can pick the materials up free from skips, I was thinking...I bet old plastic paint cans would work  ;)

Good Luck  :tu:

Rain stop play this afternoon so went in to my garage to have a really good tidy up and sharpen my chainsaw.......

I made this mask some time ago with some scrap bits of PVC pipe as a temporary bit of R&D

Found a nice bit of black PVC pipe  :D

The back might get changed. Not sure yet

The garage is still a mess and now smells of hot plastic  ::)

That looks a great idea.  How hard wearing are the joints?

That looks a great idea.  How hard wearing are the joints?

There are no actual joints just folds,
The edges that meet are not melted or glued together, just touching
I think they are fairly tough as the PVC is from 4” pipe around 2 or 3mm thick
Is that what you meant by joints?
