Question for the pros...
on: December 10, 2011, 12:21:57 PM
So... My "multi-fu" is a bit rusty as I've been out of the game for a while.  I'm looking for info on multis that DO NOT have needlenose pliers, or at least have somewhat short ones.

SOG Toolclip
Vic Swisstool
Vic Spirit
Wenger Swissgrip
Gerber MP700 (shortish)

I'll post more if I think of any

Go with the Victorinox swisstool or the smaller victorinox swisstool spirit you can never go wrong with the both of them :)

I've never been a big fan of Gerbers, but the blunt nose 600 is tempting.

And the Swisstools are just to pretty to use at work.  I had a Spirit before and I spent most of my time cleaning the fingerprints off of it :)

I also vote for the Vic Spirit but what do I know. :D I don't like Gerber myself so I can't give a fair opinion on them.

I think the MP600 is one of the best MT's Gerber do, so I'd be very tempted with the blunt nose version if that's the kind you are after. :tu:

Gerber MP600 Blunt is the only way to go if you are looking for a true blunt nose geometry. The Vic is more tapered and isn't a true blunt but more of a hybrid blunt/needle nose.

The Crunch could do it, if you are looking for locking pliers, but if that were the case, the Gerber Grappler has its charms as well. Both of these however have a taper at the distal end.

If you are looking for a nice blunt with meat at the pinching end, the MP600 is still your best bet.

Well I'd agree and go with the MP600 blunt nose suggestions :tu: surprisingly the MP600 head on the older model is very slightly bigger than the SOG micro tool clip, both shown here with a Swiss Spirit.
SOG Micro Tool Clip, Swiss Spirit and MP600 older model.

Close up.

Side on.

My Birthday list is already pretty long.  I might just have to sneak one more item on there!

I'm really considering the 600, but my previous experiences with Gerber tools are making me a bit hesitant.

Anyone have a pic of the old powerlock with the blunt nose pliers?

At one time you had a SOG ToolClip Mike, so I'm guessing you've already ruled it out. The old SOG PowerPlier is a good option. Also good is the Gerber MP600, but I would recommend one of the earlier ones, before they added the carbide inserts (which have been known to shatter)

Current blunt-nose MP600:

Ok, a thought hit me...

Would it be possible to just cut the tips off of a LM Charge?

I suppose it makes more sense to cut them off before they break off.  That's something I have thought about doing but never have, so if that's the route you go down be sure to let us know how it works out.

I would also like to point out that I know where there's a small stash of replacement Leatherman plier heads in case something goes horribly wrong.

I do own a Crunch, but it's a bit too limited for what I need.  I've also had a Toolclip and Micro Toolclip and didn't care for them.  I'm seriously considering cutting the Charge AL, mainly because it's got the tools I use the most on it.

Not sure how to cut it though... Might need Bob's help with this one.  :D

I think if I'd done it I probably would have just locked it in a vise and took a hacksaw to it then use a grinder (or belt/disc sander) to reshape it.  A cast metal plier head can't put up too much of a fight, and I don't think there's any heat treat to mess up, except maybe around the cutters, but going slowly should solve that problem.

How far back were you planning to cut them off? If you leave say, half of the length of the small serrations, you'll really only be working out at the tips. An ordinary bench grinder will make short work of that. :) Just be sure while grinding to dip them in some water frequently, so you don't mess up the temper.
