Hand warmers
« on: November 24, 2007, 12:15:42 AM »
I've been looking to get a nice hand warmer and the brand name Jon E looks like the standard one.  I've never held or used one, but it looks like an old gadget that I'd like :D

How long do these things last with one filling of fluid?  How long do the burners last before needing to be replaced?  Where are the current Jon E warmers made?

I know Zippo makes one also...are those any good?

As you can tell I don't know much about these :twak:

I wish I could help you, but I never use them.  They certainly look handy enough- maybe we should get a few of them and do a hand warmer shootout?   :D

I used to have one of those Zippos about 20 years ago. It never would stay lit for me though.  :(

I switched to the little chemical/disposable handwarmers packs. (For cold weather deer hunting)

I finally got one of the old Jon E warmers on ebay for $10 change shipped...it arrived today and it works great :mail: :o

Judging by the old busted up box, it's from the late 50's early 60's.  amazingly enough the actual warmer looks brand new.  I put a little lighter fluid in it, lit it, blew it out, and now after about 45 minutes it's so hot I need to deprive it of some air to cool it down.

This is going to be nice on those upcoming snowy, biting cold mornings when I first sit in my car after scraping and shoveling 8)

It's amazing to see what the world was like even 50 years ago...there was no disposable hand warmers, no disposable lighters...you had to actually take care of something and keep it working instead of throwing it away :twak:

After testing substitutes, I've determined that nature's own handwarmers are the best: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/jooliesews/Bobbys/handwarmers.jpg

Sadly, they are not always available when needed.  :(

Be carefull regarding how much fluid you put in your handwarmer. These things are like Zippo lighters. They will leak fluid and the fluid will give you a paifull chemical burn! :P
