Pocketwrench Mod
on: July 23, 2011, 04:09:04 AM
Anyone ever tried or thought about trying this:

The Pocketwrench is nice but I hate having the closed end wrench, it severely limits its capabilities. It also makes it harder to work with in smaller spaces. It would obviously weaken the wrench to some degree but enough to really care about?

What about something like this ? This way the carabiner will allow you to have almost the same capabilities as an open wrench and at the same time helping maintain the integrity of the tool   :tu:

I will call it...  PocketWrench III  !!

Let's see if we can inspire the guys from PocketWrench to do it  :pok:

The Pocketwrench IV will have a time travel device, I'm saving up for that.

I thought about that, I'm also irritated by fact it's closed, and we all know there is a lot of nut's and bolt's that only a open wrench can reach....

Only issue is thickness and strenght of tool. I'm afraid that by cutting off front portion the tool will loose significantly in strenght... But it's an idea, maybe for some custom maker....

Well I did it:

My first impression is that it hasn't lost enough strength to be effective at what it is, a small hand tool :tu:
Tonight if I get a chance I intend to use it to tighten the squeaky alternator belt on my car. If the jaws survive some rough use I will be quite happy :D

So far so good. Tried it on some half inch bolts around the office and I'm pretty sure it's stronger than the torque I can generate by hand.

Another positive benefit is that it is now wallet friendly :tu:

Hrmmm, it seems like it'd be fine for most hand-use applications. Keep us posted and try some bigger bolts! :salute:

I'll let the mods deal with posting to an old topic.

I want open acess to handle 'F' type connectors which are approx. 11mm.  I also like to carry the OPT on a keychain.  I really like the PW2 "less is more" ideal.  I remember a bottle opener mod from another forum.  That would be cool.  I only need 13mm capacity (shown). Alternatively open up the pry end   Only 7mm is needed to admit the cable.

While I'm thinking about options I'll do the easy mod on the Sanrenmu.  Easy because it maintains the carry as is and I expect the material to be easier to work.  The bottle opener inner was originally 3/8".  I already opened it to 10mm and the opening can accommodate 11mm.

The PW2 is a knock-off, $5 delivered from China, not sure who's IP is the the Sanrenmu.  $4 delivered from China.  Can't justify hacking a full price PW2.
