Show Us Your Scandi!!
on: July 26, 2011, 09:55:22 PM
Amici,
With all the threads about show us your this, or show us your that, I decided it was time to start a thread dedicated to that least appreciated of all grinds, the scandi.. Either you love it or hate it, you gotta admit, when it comes to bushcraft, it's weight and cutting ability is hard to beat.

Here are mine:

1-Finnish Puukko 3" blade (forged carbon steel)
2-Finnish Puukko 4 1/8" blade (forged carbon steel)
3-Mora Classic SL#2 (full tang, laminated carbon steel)
4-Mora #137 (full tang, laminated carbon steel)
5-Mora # 2 (carbon steel)
6-Marttiini Lumberjack (forged carbon steel)

I'll update as I obtain mora, (no pun intended), so if you got them lets see them!

Cheers,
Serge

Amici,
Here is my latest addition, a Marttiini Lynx puukko model # 132 that is 9" overall. It has a 4 1/4" stainless blade that is alos a full rat tail tang with is fastened and peened at the pommel, a curly birch handle that has a nice clear varnish finish.

The sheath is leather, and I am also in the process of darkening it up a bit. This will make a great necker, and so farm is my favorite of the Marttiini line.

Cheers,
Serge

Moras and Martiinis.

The Martiinis and the 511 are my everyday hard use knives.

The Bushcraft, Bahco  and 748 are currently safe queens...

my 2 cents on scandi grind not being appreciated and people hating them...

All the relevant on TV outdoor guys who have knives in their name have scandi knives in their name.

The Ray Mears, Les Stroud, Dave Canterbury knives are all scandi.  Cody Lundin does not have a knife made in his name, but is well known to use a mora.  A large number of outdoor enthusiast use scandi knives.

The problem is:  The loudest, most vocal voices in forums for knives are from fat / out of shape / computer-chair-black-ops guys with unused knives and delusional fantasies of being Rambo.  They hate on scandi knives because they "chip easy" for their "survival" needs...

I'm a big scandi fan - have been for years. I only have four of them, but to be honest I've only used two of those. Why? Because they've always done what was needed without complaint. I'll have to offer my piccies another day as I'm not with them right now - but I have two Mora Mikis a Iisakki Jaavenpaa and a Brustello.

Wierdly enough it's the Carbons (Moras) that are unused, and the other two are just getting ready for a good sharpen. They still do the job but need a little more encouragement and there is light reflecting off the edge. It'll be the first time I'll have tried to sharpen them and the first time I've ever tried using my Jap Waterstones. From what I've heard I'll need to set a good chunk of time away for that task to get them something like decent.

I've got a few but need to take some decent pics.  Here's one to be getting on with (Mora something-or-other).

First one I ever had, a Marttiini Lynx (of some description) that I picked up while in Finland.  Still one of the nicest knives I own and is a regular choice as a hiking/camping knife. :)  Only costs somewhere in the region of £25-30 as well.

Amici,
Great pics, let's keep this thread alive in tribute for our favorite grind!

Gareth, I think the Marttiini model you have may be either an older Lumberjack or Arctic Circle, depending if it's a full through rat tail tang. If so, than it's a Lumberjack.

Here's a bushcraft sheath made here in the states by JRE Industries. As you can see it comes with a firesteel loop, and is of the design which encloses most of the knife. This sheath was made for the Mora # 1 classic, but it also works great for any Marttiini Lynx with a 3 1/2" to 4" blade.

This setup makes it perfect for neck carry with a piece of 440 parachord, and the weight is next to nothing.  I have a few others on the way of varoius designs, will post when they arrive and I've "broken" them in a bit.

Cheers,
Serge

Yup, it's a full length stick tang so Lumberjack it is then.  Cheers sergmaster. :tu:

Amici,
For a project, I wanted to age my Mora SLT # 2 out a bit to more of a "bushie" look from its simple bare bones appearance, so what I had done is over the course of several days was sand the heck outta the handle, then I applied a polyurethane/walnut stain mixture that truly was a mess applying. After it finally dried and one steel wool 000 grade pad later, I was able to remove all of the sloppy poly form the Mora.

Afterwards, I took a torch over the entire handle very carefully, then applied a flat over the corner dark wood stain (Old English actually), and after letting it fully penetrate the handle through several applications, wiped it clean and gave it a quick buff.

As for the blade, I attempted to add patina by using the potato approach to mixed results. I later tried a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice but to no avail.. I guess Laminated steel doesn't take well to patina as good as carbon steel does. So anyhoo, here are the results.

Cheers,
Serge

Well, I've not been able to get all my Scandies in one place so far, so here's the ones I've got close by

Two Mora Mikis and a Brusletto ... something-or-other. The blade edge is not damaged  :ahhh - it's just the fleece they're laid on, but you can see from the light bouncing of the edge it needs a good sharpen now. It was a limited edition rustic looking job with black forged blade, though that's starting to polish up a bit now with use. The Mikis are carbon and the Brussletto is 12C27 ... I think

Missing from the pic is an Iisakki Jaavenpaa, standard 80mm (ish) blade with curly birch handle and reindeer embossed low hanging sheath. My first puukko and still my favourite  :tu:

Amici,
Just recieved two custom sheaths for the Lumberjack and the 132. I soked each one briefly in hot water so I could wet mould each sheath for the knife it was to carry. I also applied a solution to darken up the leather so here are the results.

Cheers,
Serge
