Some pics of my Opinels, together with some SAKs (I am a Swiss Army Knight, after all). I truly like the Opinels, especially the big ones. They are very lightweight for their size, and neither Victorinox nor Wenger manufacture anything comparable.

It works fine, just like the Vics and Wengers. The thing is, for efficient sawing, the length of the saw should be at least 1.5 times the diameter of the branch, preferably some more.

I had reached a point where all my EDC pocket knife needs were met by a SAK. SAK's took over my cutlery needs, and all the Case, GEC, Gerber, and others have gone. But Opinel is the only other knife I now own for when I want a dedicated knife, other than a replaceable blade Stanley utility knife. The Opinel has something that I like, and the old world funkiness is a draw to me. Maybe I just like sanding down the handles and making little mods t them to make it personal.

Victorinox and Opinel. That's all I bother with these days.

I am using my Opis a lot, lately. Carbon steel and wood. What's not to like?
... blade poking out of front of handle and thick "bolster" make the knife impossible to use all the edge or all the handle to do any detail carving drawing the knife toward your thumb.

I have given my Opi's an unsharpened ricasso. Love it. To get a ricasso, and not a dinky/poky/bloodletting/edge-eating finger choil, I sharpened the knife on a coarse stone for 10 minutes, until the edge was even with the front of the handle, except for a recurve/point at the base. Then I ground off the point, about flush with the bolster/lock and where the blade starts to straighten back out.

Works better than I would have even imagined. Even if my finger overhangs the blade a good bit, no bite, no blood. Where the blade starts, there's room to fit what you're cutting, and you can hold the knife up to and even past the point where the blade starts. Unlike a notch/choil, you can use your thumb as a backstop. The ricasso/handle stops the knife on the bottom of your thumb, even with the the tip of your thumb touching the edge. And there's no notch for catching on string/edges. So, yeah. It works, great. The only downside, IMO, is it takes more attention to sharpen.

It creates a very slight recurve. There's a slight top-heavy look to the blade and streamlined look at the base where it is flush with the lock ring. All Photobucket wants to do, lately, is install advertising viri on my computer. No pics. If you can make/sharpen a recurve, you got the idea. Silly how excited it makes me, but it makes a big difference!

Just so happens that I've been looking at the Junior Outdoor knife for my daughter.  I think we're talked about it before, but note the notch taken out of the blade near the hand.

Anyone actually tried one of these?

What hosting site do you guys use around here?

Photobucket wants to install some "container.**" file on my computer. Google calls it a virus.

Will post a pic soon enough, I hope. My grinding and polishing skill not so hot, but I like the way these guys look. Just FYI, that teeny notch ^ will allow you to shift your forward grip up by about 2.5mm, lol. It makes no appreciable difference one way or the other. The "blended" Ricasso is a whole other world of functionality, to toot my own horn, lol.

Photobucket has been crap for years. But it just started being super crap, today.

I hope this worked? Preview doesn't show pics. Trying Imgur.

Apparently, I'm getting too old for this internet thing. I think links might work, anyway?

On this particular #8, I intentionally rounded the point off a bit, too. Not quite as severe as the Junior. Just enough where I can be a little less careful with the knife. It's sharp, just not at a very fine angle. I can't pick olives out of a jar, anymore, with this knife. That's what the #10's are for.

On most of my knives, I do not want a ricasso. But the edge is recessed from the bolster on most knives, and on most knives the bolster isn't as wide as the breadth of the blade. :) This itty bit of ricasso makes a surprisingly big diff.

Thx Gareth.

And here is a pic of me choking up on the 8, squeezing as hard as I can. Even though part of my finger is fully over a very sharp blade, no cut.

Here's a pic of me pressing my thumb as hard as I can (at the base, not the tip; how I might use my thumb when carving/whittling.)

I made the ricasso a bit longer, and grind is a little more pronounced on my 10. Due to how I had shaped the tip/belly, originally, it started making a nice crescent shape, and I couldn't help but deepen the grind to make it more pronounced.

*edit: I didn't like the way that looked in the pic. The ricasso was too long. So I fixed it.

Carbon steel and wood are in an up market, according to my pockets.

Apologies if I've posted this before. My Opinel 6 in Olive. Nothing I own, nothing, comes close to slicing like an Opinel.
