Ultimate "opinel" ?   :D

I saw this Chris Reeve Opinel copy/inspired/knockoff/similar/improvement   ;) ... knife in BF and thought that it may be worthy of this thread. Damascus blade, though normal ones have also been made.

It uses a Helix lock which is, according to the internet, an improvement on the opinel lock. This was a very limited production knife for some reason.

Me too. I just don't like this knife. It might have better materials, but then a mysterious black thing in the lock? Damascus steel, but a thick blade and a strange point. (Is this a slight drop-point?)

And it does not even manage to be lockable when closed  :P
Just is not my kind of fish, I like the Opinel x1000 better for a simple folder.

K guys be gentle.  I got a ss no8 to make a sheath for a friend.  After using it for forming the two shown a lot of the leather dye had transfered to the handle.  A quick rub down with sand paper sorted it, but then I got looking at the French sites.  A quick rummage in one of the many box's of all things and I found some cocobolo wood from projects past.  It is very satisfying whittling away in the knowledge that even if you smurf up something can be saved and hay it costs £8 to buy a new one.  The little case I made to and holds my old no.4, and yes I did 'borrow' the design from the official Opinel one;-) .

Ok my latest effort. I have a couple to pieces of antler (benefits of a wife who works in a nature reserve.)  A bit of cutting and shaping with a dermal, polish and here you are.

The stuff near the collar is leather covered in superglue, then polished.  Not taking too much off the antler would have saved me this hassle.

Hmm... have some deer antler in storage. How difficult is it to make handles for the Opinels? Aren't the handles just one piece? Though antler would be tough, not to mention smelly, to work with.

Yes the handles are one piece. I cannot comment on the smell as I do not have a sense of smell, however it is the same as working bone and not the same as horn which I believe does smell.

Having cut the antler piece I wanted I next shaped the collar and using a sanding drum on a dremel. Go slow at this as you are also trying to keep everything straight.  Use the collar to show where the channel for the knife to fit into goes. Again I used a dremal with a cut off disc to achieve this.  The whole thing took about 2.5 hours.

Good luck.

Wished I could get a Garden in a Silky Oak handle.   Not sure if I have the tools or talent to make a silky oak handle myself.

That's very nice.  What about doing some cut outs as per my previous pics? Maybe make them bigger than I did though.

I haven't carried an Opi in ages.  :(  Gonna have to remedy that in the next few days, probably my carbon #6.  I did get a carbon #10 in a trade not that long ago, it's a monster!  :o

#10 is a big Opie. Its deceiving when its folded up.

I found a good size for me in the number 8 I bought. Also pretty excited to see what edge can be put on the carbon steel. if its anything like the TL-29 steel I'll be a happy man.
