We are allowed 3 1/4 inch blades here. Most here use 3" to play it safe. You can carry big fixed blades as long they are in the open.

Nate

That makes no sense. A limit to folding knives but you can carry a Katana if it is in the open.

Well not a Katana but a Kbar or some such?
A you can carry a fixed blade that can't be seen unless it is over 3 1/4 inches. Any knife that has a blade over 3 1/4 inches has to be worn openly. I wear my Mora a lot in town and the cops don't even pay attention to it. You see a lot of people around here that carry fixed blades. Must be an Ohio thing.

Nate

You carry banjos too?

A few pics of my trusty Opinel. I got this at a garage sale years ago for $1. It is the older model that does not lock the blade closed. Back when I got it I wanted to try a forced patina. It is my go to down and dirty knife. I use it all the time for those sticky, dirty tasks.

Wrong post. I agree though, Opinels are great for all kinds of dirty jobs you don't need to pity the knife. Wait, that doesn't seem so right

I think you should get one with the Viroblock, Captain. It makes using these knives much more carefree in a manner so simple yet effective it makes me shed a tear almost literally  ;)

It locks open. It just does not lock the blade closed.

It locks open. It just does not lock the blade closed.

Yes, of course it does. For a moment I was under the impression that old Opinels don't lock open instead of what you are explaining; but that doesn't make sense. Sorry

Originally all opinels were non-locking. Now, usually, some smaller models are non-locking.

Wikipedia:

The Opinel Virobloc or safety twistlock mechanism was invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, increasing the safety and versatility of the knife by allowing the blade to be locked in the open position.

In 2000, the Virobloc locking mechanism was improved to allow locking the blade in either the open or closed position

My first Opinel, a No12, doesn't have the "lock-closed" notch either.  I was actually quite surprised to find this funky "new" feature when I bought my second many years later. :D

Since I keep my edc Opinel adjusted fairly snug, I don't bother using the locking ring for  about 75% of my cutting. Like a slip joint, the dynamics of the cutting keeps the blade open. I just use the thing like a friction folder it was before 1955. For heavier jobs like bushcarft while camping, I will engage the locking ring.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.
